Some electric RC car advice

I put a 17-turn double wound motor with wet magnets in mine over the stock motor and aside from the fact that it went about twice as fast I got about 20% more time out of the batteries on the same track. I put it down to the motor being a lot more efficient.

my baja king manual says i can use a different pinion gear on the engine, being 19, 21 or 23 teeth if i remember correctly.

firstly, what difference do you see from 19 to 23 teeth? and therefore, which would give me better performance?

also, i just bought 24x ball races to fit the baja king on the 'bay for £8, which is a nice bargain, seeing as full price sets seems to be £20+!

lastly, what number turn motor should i invest in. id like the best speed for money item. are big lix brand motors any good? i saw some 17 turn ones for £15 on the 'bay? (if you could source some on there and link me, that would be super, ta)

p.s. when a motor says its something like 19 turns double, what does the double mean?

Oh, using too large a pinion will fry your motor very quickly. Work up from low to high you find a motor/pinion combo that will allow you to touch it after a reasonable run without burning your hand off.

Third post, sorry, missed your question.

Double means that the motor has 2 strands of wire wrapped x number of times round each pole.

cheers for the info :)

so i guess the mid ranged pinion is the best as its an all rounder?

now ive got ball races, my next purchase will be at least 1 new battery pack, around 3000+mah i think. my stock motor (27 turns i think) should hande that ok? im using a manual speed controller too, the battery wont fry it though will it? (motor and ESC are next!!)

Definitely get an electronic speed controller (even before you get a new motor IMO!). Will make a huge difference in controllability and speed of your car.

The battery won't fry it, mAh is the measurement of battery capacity, the voltage is always the same.

No idea about the motor, but I'm sure its absolutely fine. Reedy are a well known brand name.

ive seen some 8.4v batteries around, are they ok to use with ESC's?

out of interest, how much run time should a 1400mah give me? and how much for a 3800?

im still looking for some decent, cheap priced batteries. www.cheapbatterypacks.com looks like the cheapest so far, but id have to wait for the overseas postage.

I own a Tamiya Baja King and at the mo its all stock stuff.

Im looking into getting some hop up items to help get longer runsand a bit more speed.

Can anyone suggest where to start? i.e. the cheapest hop-ups for price ratio.

Some links to good online shops and even items on the 'Bay are welcome (e-mail if ebay links arent allowed)

I have one of these:)

www.tamiyaclub.com (forums are great)

The chaisis is pretty robust but the money you would spend on hop ups like suspension, gearing, bearings would buy a better car.

The only thing you should do is a 19T motor such as a Reedy Spec 19 Quad Mag and an electronic speed controller both of which can be put into other cars.

Don't worry about needing to ball race etc becuase of the hop up motor as it just isn't worth it on these.

They are pretty nippy with a 19T in and a 3300mh battery will last a while.

I set up some huge jumps (height of a real car) to destroy mine after I got bored with it, but all I bent was an upright bolt after a coupple of battery pack runs. It scuffed it a bit but still runs no probs today.

i have been racing elec rc cars for a while. I reckon the first things you should buy if you want to make your car go faster is
1. ballraces (this makes the movement smoother)
2. A battery pack with a larger MAH (e.g 3300) (this will let your car run longer and you will need a larger battery pack if you want to upgrade your motor from a 540 stock)
3. if you want to upgrade you motor then you are best going for a 19 turn wind 2

make sure you can drive your car well at stock before you go upgrading as damage can cost a lot of money and not being able to control the car can be quite frustrating. Also if you are buying saddle pack batteries you will want a discharger and a levelling board.
hope this helps. Someone else who has had more experience (as i am only 14 and only raced for about 2 years) may know more you could upgrade (so do i but there will be no performance upgrade just strength) :D :D

i just read that the car you have is based on the tamiya TL-01 and if it is then definitly get some oil shocks (they cost about £40 but are well worth it) i had a TL-01 as my first car and i went racing with it (no oil shocks) and it rolled on every corner. It is the worst car i have ever had and because of that i will never have another tamiya again. I at the moment have a schumacer mission carbon and a Yokomo MR-4TC (the yokomo is for playing with on streets and the schumacer is for racing) :D :D

Well a 3800 will give you about 3 times run time.

Delivery is less than a week from CBP.com.

i also believe they sell 4200 now dont they but i bet they are like £40 :D

Yup, also www.maxamps.com have them who I also use from time to time. One good thing is that CBP.com always mark their parcels as gifts. :D Maxamps even have the GP4300's which should be great!

thanks for all the info guys, big help :)

as for ESC's, is there a good brand to look out for? and i need to get one rated with lower turns then my motor correct? i.e 27T motor and say a 21T ESC?

spotted a LRP 10T ESC on the 'Bay going cheap so :)

edit: ive been spotting more motors on the 'bay, brand new, but without bullet connector leads. where could i get a set of leads from if i needed to add them?

i wouldnt buy a 10t motor they really are fast and will wear out your batt quicker i would buy a 19t motor from a shop, you can get a heap one for about £17.99 and as for the leads all you need is to go into a shop and buy some red and blue wire solder it to your motor then buy some gold bullet connectors and solder them on. I dont use bullet connectors i solder the wire from the speed controller straight to the motor as this decreases the amount of connectors thus increasing the reliability :D

btw if you say the motor is new then it should already have wire and gold bullet connectors soldered to it :D

as foe esc's i would buy one with about a 11t limit or a unlimited turn (which means you can use any motor) and i would look out for nosram or somthing like that.

p.s if you are a begginer and know you will crash a lot then buy a esc that has foward and reverse not foward and brake :D

Hehe, i got bored of the car though, then bought an r/c heli! Much more fun.

I had a carbon TC3 with all the hop ups, and a tuned up orion 11 turn motor, that was fast, it was real fast with my racing 19t in it and the batts lasted a bit longer, got boring pretty quick though, I am thinking about the heli's now, think I'll be throwing money away by breaking them though!

get a good 19T for begginers, then get a faster motor just to mess about with if you fancy it.

You could always go brushless! :D

i havnt found it boring at all, did you race it or just mess about with it. I am thinking of getting one of those rc nitro bikes they look pretty fun to drive (or ride w.e) :D
