Some good fantasy series (books)?

The Farseer Trilogy
The Liveship Traders
The Tawny Man
The Runelords

Some of my favourie, the top 3 trilogies are great, and I've just finished The Runelords so far, 5th book and the next one won't be here till October :( but they're still really good.

A Song of Ice and Fire - George RR Martin
Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Dark Tower - Stephen King
His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman

Did you, Burt, list Sword of Truth at the top because it's your favorite? It's just that I found it to be a rubbish version of Wheel of Time which itself has lost it's way.

The three underlined ones are in my favourites. Awesome books. Unfortunately the OP's not too keen on Robin Hobb :(

You might want to try something like -

Innocent Mage followed by Awakened Mage by Karen Miller. Reading Innocent Mage at the moment and its quite entertaining.

Gemmel books are awesome. Have read most if not all the Drenai series of books. Feist books are awesome too, not been long since I finished A Darkness at Sethanon. Will be moving back to some Feist once Ive finished what Im reading at the moment.

Couldnt get into Weiss and Hickmans writing styles. Likewise with RA Salvatore. Dont get me wrong but when reading stuff like Dragonlance or Icewind Dale, I could imagine them as being daytime TV **** shows like Xena Warrior Princess or Hercules The Legendray Journeys. Too americanised for me.

Recently finished Forgotten Realms: Elminster and D&D: The Rod of Seven Parts. Both books are a bit too rigid with what the fantasy worlds revolve around.

For a hoot, the books of Simon R Green. They're so far over the top that they're out of sight, but they are fun - something rare in fantasy. They are also surprisingly gripping.

Yeah, his fantasy stories are a bit strange. He's also written one of the most awesome Sci-fi series ever in Deathstalker, which is nearly as odd as his fantasy in places.

The Old Kingdom Series ~ Garth Nix

The Keys To the Kingdom Series ~ Garth Nix

Sabriel, Liriel and Abhorsen are fantastic books. I really wish he would do something else in the same setting.

Is the Keys to the Kingdom series good? From the book blurbs it sounded a bit odd.

* The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan * enjoyed that set of books as an easy read, then again, shouldnt all good books be an easy read lol..

If you can put up with sci-fi, the battlebooks have a really good plot line in them.

The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams? Worth a look.

This is the first in the series called 'Memory, Sorrow, Thorn' (or 'An American Winter' i think i have heard it referred to also), quite a lengthy read as it's 4 books in total, but well worth it.

even if it is "Teen" fantasy

Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea books are written for teenagers and IMNSHO are probably the best fantasies ever written. Alan Garner's various fantasies for teens are harder work than most so-called "adult" fantasies. That said, a fair number of fantasy series/books could be read without difficulty by a fairly bright twelve-year old.

I don't think anyone's mentioned them so far, but The First Law by Joe Abercrombie has been pretty good so far (I think the last one's just come out).

Just re-reading the Winter of the World books now, although I can't find my copy of the third book:(.

If you've ever wondered what would happen if an irresistible force met an immovable object, then read that series because it happens over and over again. Chuck in various heroes and villains, each more ridiculously faster/stronger/more heavily armed than the last. Great fun.

I've gone off fantasy, but ones i can recall as being very good are

Sword Of Shannara by Terry Brooks
The Many Coloured Land series by Julian May
Magician by Raymond E. Feist

The Old Kingdom Series ~ Garth Nix

The Keys To the Kingdom Series ~ Garth Nix

I loved the Old Kingdom series, probably the first fantasy series I read, apart from Harry Potter.

The keys to the kingdom, they're okay but aren't that great. For much younger readers too imo as I could finish one easily in a day. Interesting concept though, worth a read I'd say.

That's a shame, really great set of books there. I'd really reccomend The Runelords to people though, I love them.

Quite a specific request here, but does anyone know of any pirate themed fantasy books, preferabley quite dark. Been looking for some recently, but I know FA about authors and such and half of them seem to be kids books :p
