I'm currently running XP Pro but have a copy of Vista Home Basic to upgrade to.

How does the performance of the Home Basic Vista compare to XP Pro - will I miss any significant features and will it be quicker?

Am I correct in saying the 32 bit Home Basic supports 4gb RAM?

Thanks

No, no 32-bit operating system supports 4GB RAM properly.

Judging by your specs you'd be best off with a 64-bit version of Vista.

You should see a speed increase as Vista will use your 4GB RAM to 'pre-load' programs you use quite often, these pre-loaded programs are then released from memory when the RAM is needed for something else (e.g. a game).

Craig.

vista 32 will not be any quicker than xp at the moment, service pack 1 will add some performance enhancements and visual candy is aplenty as standard. Its a newer os vs a 7 year old one. Its up to you, basic will mean basic though. I am running 64bit business and my notebook is running 2gb ram which is plenty, it never lags and even with our bespoke software etc running alongside office apps it never breaks the 75 percent ram useage mark.

Thanks for the comments.

I was given a copy of Home Basic 32 bit so I'm not really up for buying a new 64 bit version.

I think I may give the Home Basic a try if it uses more of my RAM than XP Pro.

In terms of gaming, browsing internet and watching films, the Home Basic should be just as good as XP Pro though?

I think you may be able to get the 64 bit version for the cost of postage from Microsoft. Check down the threads a little way.

As far as 64 bit is concerned, it will be more fussy that 32 bit about all sorts of apps, especially games so 32 bit may be all you need.
