Hello i got a new cpu cooler today i followed the instructions word for word took my time and installed it fine.

I turned my pc on i could smell burning i looked through the side window and looked to be smoke coming from the mobo near to the ram i tried to turn the power off but it wouldnt so i turned it off from the psu.

My instant thought was my cpu has been fryed cause i not installed the cooler right so i took the cpu out and it looks fine it doesnt smell burnt or anything no sign of anything been burnt either.

The burnt smell seems to becoming from my mobo.

Has any one got any idea what the hell has happend, never had anything happen be4 like this its left me kinda shaken in a wierd way.

I have not tried to turn my pc on since then.

My mobo is a asus p8p67 pro and my cpu i5-2500k

sounds like maybe a capacitor or somethings failed, not too sure on motherboards myself, but im sure there'l be someone else who knows :)

Kinda hope so if it was the cpu i would assume there be some sort of sign of damage.

Yes, but in a small confined space, it is not always easy to tell exactly where the issue is coming from. The PSU is the thing that is most likely to go bang or catch fire.

I have have a psu burn out on me be4 and the smell came form the psu when tha happend theres no sign of that this time though

I am gonna be brave and turn it back on gonna put my old cpu cooler back on see what happens or is that a bad idea.

I cant see how the CPU cooler can be issue, if it wasnt installed correctly the CPU would have reached Tmax and then the CPU would shut down to avoid any damage to it. Modern CPU's have built in safety features to avoid damage via over heating.

If the PSU has gone bang i doubt it will switch on....

Pretty sure its not the cpu as well even if the cooler wasnt installed as u say it would just slowly overheat and turn off.

Cooler is a Thermalright Archon.

I been advised to unplug everything barring cpu and cooler and boot it, watch for smoke, if i get no beeps the mobo is dead. Gonna give it ago.

Not necessarily, you won't get beeps if you don't have a BIOS speaker.

Plug it in and turn it on at the wall, but don't actually turn the computer on. Open it up and take a look at the motherboard, there should be some lights on it somewhere, if there is not, then it is fried.

kk i have pluged i in at the wall and theres a green light on my mobo, whats the paper clip trick

Nope the burnt smell i is coming from the top of my mobo cant smell anything from my psu

I'm gonna take the mobo out and try locate where he smell is coming from cause on the front of the board tehre no sign of anything been burnt

I have found the problem on the back of the mobo near where the ram is there is a burnt aera i have no idea whats caused this

I am guessing that will make the mobo kaput will i have any issues rmaing this.
