Someone Ran me over..

Glad you are okay thats the main thing.

You have to do a few things starting with uploading the footage so we can stare in horror for a while :D - then take that git to the cleaners, running off after the accident is going to get him in DEEP DOO DOO, that is an offence that looked on as really bad. My missus bumped a car while driving a 4x4 and genuinely didn't know she had but because she didn't report it she got points and heavy fine, this guy drove away from a collision in which you would be clearly injured and in need of medical assistance and what if another car hit you while you were on the ground??? Failing to stop in this case has got to be dealt with harshly to send a message to others.

Probably for the same reason that people still think the motor vehicle is the right answer.

Good luck have fun getting you're new 34 in ultrawide from Newcastle to Cambridge on a push bike, I'll pay £20 to watch, awhile I'm shotgun in a Range Rover Evoque :D

Or you could buy one of these cars https://www.carwow.co.uk/tax-exempt-carsand not pay vehicle tax, or whatever it's called this week.

As an asside, I think it should be abolished and added to fuel duty, burn more fossil fuel, pay more tax.

It's a fairer way of doing it, as you could do 30k miles a year in a low tax or tax free car, and cause much more pollution and pay a lot less than someone who has an engine with more emissions who only does 5k miles per year.

Yeah I agree much fairer way of doing it but at the end of the day if they did this fuel would double in price, we all know how the gov like to strangle us for cash!

Yeh it would have to be done in a very transparent manner so people could be confident that that the addition on fuel duty is roughly equivalent of the current vehicle tax.

But I can't see the government being that transparent.

Helmets designed for horse riders are vastly different from helmets designed for cyclists.

They are? My Oh horse riding helmets have all been plastic over polystyrene same as cycle helmets.

Personally I'm under no illusion that a helmet will protect against all types of impact. However I'd rather not put my partner and family in the position of having to feed and wipe my ass if I smacked my head. I want to take all reasonable precautions against that happening.

Also we're only just starting to learn about things like multiple concussion syndrome, something that the "stats" (which lets face it can always be twisted to suit) probably don't factor.

So there is absolutely no downsides to wearing a helmet then?

I'm sure someone can give 1 example of where a helmet caused more damage compared to not wearing one, like getting it caught in a tree branch and damaging your neck ( as a wild example )

But for the vast majority of impact related accidents - what would you prefer hitting the tarmac first - head or helmet ?

I'm sure when seal-belts became compulsary, similar examples of what if i get trapped and the car is sinking in a lake ( another wild example ) were used to give an example against it.

Take the most likely over the random occurance.

I have come off my bike quite heavily a few times nad my helmet hasn't mark on it.

I did however managed to remove the end of my nose, pull my lips away from my gums remove half my top lip whist smashing the bones in my nose to bits hitting a parked car after I was shoved into it by a car passing me. I was already cycling at the 30mph speed limit and had no chance to react. The little spoiler on the back of the Focus S-Max is a pretty lethal!

3 hours of facial surgery later and you'd hardly know it happened. Always worn a helmet but it's not come into use yet. I must be pretty goot at not banging my head!

Also wear a lid when horse riding. Feels strange not to and there's a damn good chance of landing on your head from behing high up and also getting kicked or trodden on.

Seen some horrific injuries from those who don't wear them, but they only do so much really. It's a small area of protection. 30mph, skin, tarmac = 0.3 seconds from skin to bone. Doesn't bode well for much of the bodynot just the head. Makes those riding motorbikes in jeans look insane (I used to do that too).

I've had two bad accidents where my head hit the floor (with helmet) and I woke up in A&E.
I have no doubt that my helmet saved me from either death or brain damage and nobody will convince me otherwise.
I've also had at least another 3 accidents where I've gone over and my helmet has hit the floor but I might have walked away.
It makes me laugh that a motorbiker or scooter rider have to legally wear a helmet but a cyclist can do 30mph (or more) but doesn't have to wear one, it really makes no sense.

Sweet mother Hubbard, I'm seriously reconsidering my choice of commute transport. I've got to say I'm impressed you still saddle up, especially after the facial surgery.

I'd like to say in this case I was in some way at fault, however I really couldn't find a reason.

None of it bothered me one bit. Just got on with it. I wouldn't worry. One piece of advice, if you know you're going to hit something try hit it with your helmet, not your face! :D

I was going hard, if I was going slower I may have been luckier but it was just the circumstances. Even just hitting a different kind of car could have had a different outcome.

When I do commute to work it's a 20 mile commute from the countryside to Bury and 90% urban. So the chances of problems significantly increase sadly. Especially at this time of year.

Reminds me, hardly cycled this year due to other things. Need to pull my finger out.
