Someone Ran me over..

So the general consense is that wearing a helmet is useless for cycling in some cases and is not part of a law to do so.

And countries that inforced a law to wear helmets have had people stop cycling because of it?
Spot on - with the added caveat that evidence suggests wearing a helmet changes the way (some) drivers behave towards you with an increase in close passes and risky manoeuvres evident.

There is even evidence that (some) cyclists take more risks when wearing a helmet due to a feeling of invincibility . It's analogous to (some) drivers of 4x4's being maniacs on the road. That's something I need to read up more on.
But in some cases it is useful to have a helmet on?
Indeed it is...

Over 200 posts but we did it GD! Very much agree with this summary.

Look, cyclists should have insurance and wear helmets. Simples. Should be law!

Police should crack down on them going through red lights and mounting pavements etc etc. Car drivers and motorcyclists have to abide by the rules so why can't cyclists?

The Lycra brigade will scoff at the above but they use the road so should be expected to abide by the laws of the road (Some do) and should be made to have insurance etc. (Unless you have a long beak / bill :p)

People walk on roads. Do they need helmets and to have insurance?

Remember, the stats on here have already shown a pedestrian is more likely to suffer a head injury than a cyclist.

I'd love to see Police cracking down on people driving through red lights and doing unsafe things on the road, regardless of if they're on a bicycle or in a vehicle.

I drive/ride on the road and abide by 'the rules', I therefore expect others to do so. But we all know how that works out...

Fact of the matter is - the vast majority of road users do not even know the Highway Code, nevermind abide by it. Not even the Police.

I must admit I go through some red lights when it's safe to do so, i.e. nobody crossing and no traffic moving. I often do an exaggerated 'look both ways' first.

The reason being it seems* safer for me to be several metres ahead of the cars when the lights change rather than stuck in the lead car's blind spot. (*Not got stats ;))

Also interesting to note there's a very busy 4-way junction in town here that has had it's traffic lights disabled for the last few months. I assume it's a trial. From my experience it works much better as everyone (cyclists and motorists) has to stop and use their eyes and brains to work out when it's safe to go. I hope the results are favourable so we can have more individual responsibility (like me jumping lights).

Off topic!

Stats don't mean squat. Real life is more important.

We are on about people using vehicles on the road. Why not scrap insurance then for all road users?

A pedestrian is more likely to suffer a head injury as there are more of them!

Lycra brigade will always try to dodge 'reality' just like they do red lights! lol

Well road tax was originally meant for that before they started giving it out in welfare, otherwise what is the point in road tax? How much money do you think is made from it? How many cars on the road in britain? Say 20 million cars pay £100 a year that make £2 billion easily, and £100 road tax is low compared to how much is on higher polluting vehicles. Maybe 20 million cars on the road is a little high but you get the idea.

OMG I'M GOING TO EXPLODE

He has no idea

Did he not get the signature :D

Last i check bikes produce very little pollution and CO2 emissions are lil more than an average person breathing after moderate exercise

Todays departure from reality has been brought to you by koolpc™, ably aided by Doogles™.

mounting pavements etc etc.

Another thing you have no clue about.

The DfT state it's perfectly OK for responsible and considerate cyclists who feel vulnerable on the roads to cycle on pavements.

Please explain it too me then, I am all for learning! I always thought road tax is road tax, I thought it meant literary but if I'm wrong please explain than shoot me ;)

It's vehicle tax (we stopped calling it road tax in the 1930's and stopped calling it VED or vehicle excise duty in 2012 I think - apparently the general public were confused about what excise duty was! So they just called it tax instead).

It's a tax that entitles you to use your vehicle on the road (coupled with insurance and "by license") and it's a variable tax based on the emissions of the vehicle, hence electric vehicles and other zero emissions vehicles are exempt, along with vehicles used by the disabled, tractors etc. As it's emissions based, even if vehicle tax did apply to cycles, they would be zero rated and cyclists would't pay anything - so the whole argument of cycles "paying road tax" is mute anyway.

Its moot because we pay for the roads through general taxation. Any talk about emissions or anything else is just noise.
