Someone Ran me over..

I really cant work out why some people are inclined to believe this tosh. Good luck not wearing a cycle helmet. You'll need it.

Well, my luck has held out until 38 years of age - fingers crossed!

Look, a helmet is better than no helmet! Simples!

You haven't read a word of the last page have you? It's not that simple.

+1

I can't understand people arguing about this simple logic.

It's not logic though - it's a fallacy.

A fair point, it's a personal choice, and as you say many of the studies are pretty inconclusive.
There was a study in Australia that suggests more accidents happen whenbthe cycling population wear more helmets, but it doesn't go into much more detail than that, so we don't know how many were trivial, and how many were more serious. Or indeed how many trivial accidents went unreported, so it's very difficult to get an accurate picture.

Its well know that a helmet is better than none at all. If you want to risk without one then so be it. I would rather my child wear one than not!!!!

Well assumed maybe, but not well known, what statistics are you basing your opinions on? If its that simple youll be able to prove your opinion quite easily.

No need for statistics or numbers! Human life and care for others is more important. Obviously you dont have kids as if you did you would want them to wear a helmet!!!!!!!!!!!

Thread title should be...................

I got in the way of a motorist who pays tax and insurance and he hit me as I was not paying enough attention. :p

Tell any parent that their kids not wearing helmets while cycling is nothing to worry about!

Just because they're paranoid and illogical still doesn't make it right. Really...is there something wrong with you? You've had a number of sources posted at you yet you continue to post incorrect drivel with no backup.

A very flawed logic though, it does seem counter intuitive that helmets can actually increase the risk of injury, but that is what the limited data seems to suggest.

Is nobody reading my posts?

Even Dis86's cyclehelmets.org doesn't go that far. At most it says
...there was no significant difference in outcome between helmet wearers and non-wearers for injuries serious enough to warrant hospital admission...
For minor injuries helmets help, for more serious injuries they might help or have no effect.

"Marsh isn't alone in suggesting bike helmets shouldn't be worn. In a 2010 Tedx Talk (video above) Mikael Colville-Andersen, cycling ambassador for Copenhagen, insisted that some research found that cycle helmets actually cause more brain damage.

Moreover, he described society's obsession with safety equipment as "almost pornographic." Why, he wondered, don't pedestrians wear helmets, as they suffer more brain damage than cyclists?"

Because it's based on provable statistics, where as your opinion is emotional, and hence irrationally based on one freak accident. You need to take away your emotional influence, and look at the figures objectively. Risk compensation is real, people take more risks when they feel protected, and driver's pass closer, just these two factors increase your risk of being involved in an accident dramatically, and subsequently increased risk of injury.

Cycle helmets simply are not designed to protect against serious hard impact, look up the specs and standards.

See now if I saw you on the road without one I'd want to run you off the road just so I could see some soup splash :D

Maybe because pedestrians have no chance to fall over doing 10 mph into a lamp post or kerb, they can put out hands and stop themselves. I really don't give a fly **** if you wear a helmet or not just don't bitch when you hurt yourself. I guess some cyclist' think they are invincible and when they hurt themselves blame others, because ego and arrogance got the better of them.

Also to counter his claims everyone walks somewhere everyday unless housebound but not everyone cycles so that point is invalid.

What research?

The rest of the article doesn't support the claim that helmets 'increase the risk of injury'. At worst he says cars drive 3" closer, but that doesn't necessarily translate to head injury.
