Something fun for 5k

BMW 328 Coupe E36 and some change?

Look pretty sweet still but not sure they are worth the money compared to others in the range.

Surely thats not a Turbo? At best a Spec-S

The auction sheet doesn't list the engine type sadly, but an SR20DET and ancillaries isn't too hard to come by in the UK, especially at this time of year ;)

However this one claims to be turbo and is going for £2,393.91 FOB price. Auction grade isn't so great though.

Remember Morba, this is ocuk. Where even a £200 is a mega service bill.

Service costs are going to be at least £200, probably more for an old M that you don't know what sort of life it's had. The repair costs on it are prohibitive; if you need to know how much it is to service, you probably can't afford it. For this sort of car, the OP would probably need to spend £4k and keep a grand back for issues, something you're going to have on an M3 of this age. £200 IS a big service bill when you specifically ask for cheap to run!

Nothing will put more of a smile on your face than one of these:

They have so much presence, even when just parked up on your drive....I quite happily sat grinning like a loon at mine on my front steps :D

Cheap to run, cheap to insure and aren't even that horrendous on fuel compared to some equivalents.

Fully equipped too, power seats, electric mirrors, aircon, trip computers, big vented discs front and rear, ABS, PAS, central locking, LSD, etc etc...

.....and the noise isn't bad either:

Haven't had the chance to do that for a while, thanks :p

If you want something that makes you go "OH YEA" every single time you get in it, I guarantee that THIS is it. Haven't come across anything else that gives you quite the same feeling (in the price range) yet.....

......and you'll never meet yourself driving down the road either ;)

If that one is a turbo its a conversion. If it were me I'd want an original early Spec-R, with the roller bearing turbo. Plus the Spec-R's have a helical LSD, which the Spec-S doesnt, and you wouldnt be able to guarantee a conversion would have that.

Now you're just getting picky. Of course you aren't going to get one of those for 5K.

Are you saying the N/A version is no fun at all though?

Also, good luck finding somewhere in the UK that can recondition a roller bearing turbo. I ended up having to buy a brand new one for £700 when the primary turbo in my newly purchased Legacy went, only to have the secondary go pop a few months later

Not picky, just stating my preferences.

Ohhh yes :)

165hp vs 250hp. Open diff vs LSD.

No contest IMO :)

Yup, as you've found you wont get a roller bearing turbo serviced, they need to be replaced. That wouldnt be an issue for me as I'd just replace it with a GT28RS, which is a bolt in replacement :)

Never said there was but really we're looking at 5K cars with the top suggestion being an MX-5, How does the Spec S stack up against the MX-5?

That is the good thing about Nissans, so many interchangeable parts, why do you think I bought a Cefiro? ;)
He could get the Spec S and convert it later, for all we know the OP could be 23 with only 2 years no claims.

Very few RS Turbos left that haven't rotted through. Those still in good nick probably aren't for sale. Good choice if you can find one though :)

Hmmn, an old fwd rot box wouldn't be my idea of fun.

Personally it'd need to be rwd and preferably turbo charged or very light. As I needed some practicality I went for a 200sx, slightly less and it would have been a mr2 turbo.

I'm surprised no one has suggested a caterham 7 style car. There's very little that's more fun but you'd need a garage and probably another car too.

From the OP it sounds like the car would be his daily drive, I doubt he'd want something so impractical as an every day car.

That said they are blinding fun!
