Something going on at Microsoft HQ?

I don't see the appeal of having built in WiFi. If you want to stream HiDef content, plain old g network isn't ideal and it means anyone with n based networks are out of luck. That and the fact that using a cable (where possible obviously) is still the best option IMO.

It would be nice, but not if it means a more expensive 360. A price cut for the console and the adapter would be better IMO.

Well the DS has built in wireless so i dont see how it could make it more expensive, as for the appeal of it, my tv is at the other end of the house from my router and having wifi is very handy.

Heck my Zune player has wifi built in. It really wouldn't cost much.

Indeed, if nintendo are managing to push out a handheld for sub £100 that has built in wireless i fail to see any reason why it couldn't quite easily be built into the 360. I imagine this is just the shortages we've been hearing of - nothing more. Eventually they will start to appear again.

Adding anything will make the console slightly more expensive to make. Only adding a few dollars to the cost admittadly.

There is no doubt about it. For some wireless is essential but I'm glad I could go back to a wired network.

To me the bigger problem is how quick the wireless standards are changing. It won't be long before the n spec becomes standard.

As far as I can see the article does not mention wifi - they just seem to be trying to make a more reliable (and maybe cheaper to produce) console as well as being able to reuse some old parts.

Blu-ray Xbox 360 Planned By Microsoft?

Rumours were circulating today that Microsoft is set to dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu ray Xbox 360 by as early as May 2008. The move will allow the Company to go head to head with the Sony PS3 gaming console which has been credited with being one of the main reasons that retailers have preferred Blu-ray over Toshiba’s HD DVD.

Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months.

The Company has also been working on a built in Blu-ray player however insiders are claiming that Microsoft see the HD format battle moving online with consumers offered 1080p movie and content files as a download as opposed to having to buy a HD DVD or Blu-ray disc.

So the question is did Microsoft really misjudge demand after christmas and the "online store" made a mistake in labelling all current SKU's as discontinued? or are they clearing out old stock as best they can in preperation for new SKU announcements?

Most n or pre-n networks do also still recognise g and even b so I don't think that would be a problem.

What a balls up. What exactly are they going to do with this built in blu ray player? It wont be able to play games without alienating over 10 million original sku owners. If they bought out a internal blu ray 360 that played games on blu ray disc I'd sell everything I have 360 related and turn my back on the 360. As an early adopter I'd have been anally abused enough.

An external Blu ray drive would need to be around £30-50 otherwise you may as well just buy the Ps3 anyway if your new to the market and it would look better.

I can't see the 360 getting a Blu-Ray drive, personally I think MS will just go for downloadable stuff. I think they only brought out the HD-DVD drive to throw a spanner in the works of Blu-Ray sales and more-so PS3 sales.

I don't think they care about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

Quite embarrassing for MS if they did bring out a BD Drive though.

Haven't they said if the market demands it they'll release it?

Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware said the console still supports HD DVD, but would gain a Blu-ray add-on if HD DVD fails as a next-generation format.

"It should be consumer choice, and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Penello told Reuters in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"I fundamentally don't think this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus PS3," he added.

They did say it would be a possiblity over a year ago if needed.

Plus, Blu-Ray (as well as HD-DVD) use Microsoft codecs, so it was a win-win situation for Microsoft no matter which next-gen video disc won, they'll still be raking in licensing fees!
