Something going on at Microsoft HQ?

Why do you need internet browsing on a console? You have it on the PC.
Why do you need an external HDD for downloading games? I hope you're only on about demo's anyway, which you can download to a HDD which MS sell in 20gb and 120gb flavours.
Xbox live is only £30-£40 a year, it's nothing, it's less than a night out.

Yea but not everyone has PCs in thier living room!
20Gb is too little whilst 120Gb is too expensive.
Live is a rip off. Period.

No one can say that until home is released. At present xblive is better than the PSN and you pay a premium for that superior service. If it turns out Home is equal to or better than Live then i'm sure microsoft will either drop the price or improve it to outdo sony again.

Is it worth £25?

I don't think it's worth £10. It's not the price that gets me but rather the principle. the service should be a part of the console which makes the 360 stand apart from it's competitors, it shouldn't be something you have to pay extra for. Where does the money actually go? It's not like they need it to upkeep the multiplayer servers!

See this has become quite a big issue among myself and my friends. Why on earth is xboxlive a pay for service when there are no dedicated servers. Stop me if i'm wrong, but i just finished playing a game of warhawk on a 32 man server with a ping of anywhere between 20-50 - that just isn't possible on the 360 at present is it? (The playercount at least).

So you prefer the PSN where you cannot invite friends etc?

I think the PSN is better if you play by yourself online a lot but if you have friends then the XBL system is much more social. I agree that we should have some dedicated servers already though!

I don't get the whole 'Live is better' thing, why is Live better? The only difference I can see is being able to message people from within a game (which a fair few games let you do now anyway)

I play online regularly with people from these forums over PSN and never have any real issues.

In fact my experience of both is less lag and less kiddies on PSN which suits me as I hate both :D

I prefer PSN because it's free, but I do wish it had some of the features of Xbox Live. It annoys me when I'm in a game and I get a message from someone and I have to exit the game to read it, and yes I would ove to be able to invite friends into games whilst i'm still playing that game etc, but if you're asking if this service is worth paying extra for then I would say no.

I remember when I first got Sky+ and I paid £200 for the box, then paid my monthly subsciption for channels. Then on top of that I found out that I had to pay an extra £10 a month just to be able to use MY hard drive in MY Sky+ box to record the programs I was paying for - this really peed me off and I think it's a similar thing with Xbox Live. You have bought the console, you have bought the game so you should be able to play it online with your mates without having to pay an annual subscription for the privilege.

They did say it would be a possiblity over a year ago if needed.

Plus, Blu-Ray (as well as HD-DVD) use Microsoft codecs, so it was a win-win situation for Microsoft no matter which next-gen video disc won, they'll still be raking in licensing fees!

Blu-ray uses h.264 almost exclusivley now. Not microsoft codecs.

In my experience of both the PSN is a VERY solitary experience, which I guess suites a lot of people on here. XBL is focussed around your friends and social gaming with messaging, invites, lobbys, private chat, video, friends list and gamerscore etc. The only problem with it is the lack of dedicated servers.

This could make live better.

Job posting alludes to "next release" which will aim at "mainstream audiences"
Rumours have surfaced that Microsoft has begun work in earnest on a new, or additional, iteration of its tremendously successful Xbox Live platform.
The wind that's fanning the flames is a job posting on Microsoft's US careers site for the role of a program manager to work in the Xbox department.
What will interest people the most, however, is the wording of the posting:
"Want to be involved in the next release of Xbox? Join the server-backed games team, part of the Xbox Live team that's responsible for creating a completely new way for mainstream audiences to enjoy the Xbox and Live," says the ad.
"We're building the games, the console interface and logic, and the server support for a totally new Live experience. Both the games and the dashboard experience will be deeply paired with dynamic server support to create a compelling, fresh scenario each time.
"We are looking for a passionate games producer to help implement our first generation games that will run in this new environment."
No additional information on the project, or comment on the job ad was available at time of publishing
