Something iPhone'ish

Erm, how is it subjective? Iphone camera vs Omnia camera.........no contest.

So when you said better cameras were you talking about all Windows Mobile phones or just the one? We're discussing Windows Mobile not the Omnia exclusively. I've had Windows Mobile phones with cameras that are far worst than the iPhone's one.

why should we discuss old windows mobile phones ? surely we should discuss ones that are nearly as pricey as the iphone ?

all the new range of them have much better cameras

Yeah but this is why I'm saying it's subjective, not all of them have better cameras. Yes the Omnia has a better camera than the iPhone, but the HTC tytn 2 doesn't etc etc.

The argument was made in favour of Windows Mobile devices in general, not just the ones with the better cameras.

Like what

I'm not baiting for an argument, it's just that I'm a recent iPhone convert and used Windows Mobile phones for around 3 years in the past. Unless I'm overlooking something I can't honestly see how Windows Mobile has far more "FAR more functionality and capabilities" than the iPhone.

Well lets start with the simple one.. bluetooth is way more functional. Applications are more varied and easier to install. You get stuff like word, excel etc. ( all be it small versions ) and most winmobile devices have a better camera.

And that's just off the top of my head.

Granted the tytn 2 ( which is a lot older ) doesn't have a better camera than the 3G.. but the slide out keyboard is excellent.

Like I said, doesn't make it far more functional and capable though. More functional and capable in some areas granted but it's not leaps and bounds.

Anyway we've already covered bluetooth, cameras etc etc. I just used the tytn 2 as an example as it was just out when the iPhone was knocking about and was around £300 iirc.

just feels like more value for money with the windows mobile devices , mainly due to the lack of fashion tax

does the same and sometimes more for cheaper and with better contracts

z0mbi3 i think you've also hit the nail on the head yourself accidentally. There is only one iPhone and its a one phone fits all people sollution that doesn't work. WinMo (as much as i don't get along with it at all) is very versatile, has many ranges and different manufactures developing hardware for it. Result is usually a better phone...

This is really the main reason why I prefer them to the iphone and it's the same reason why I, and most of us here, run windows pc's. The hardware choice is so much greater that I am more likely to get all of the functions that I want.

TBH I'm not that bothered about cameras on phones, it's just a bonus really. I was just looking for something extra to add to the iphone bashing list! Sorry z0mbi3 :p

If you want a phone sized, pda like, thing:

HTC S740

If you want a touch-screen pda, but smaller than the iPhone:

HTC Touch Pro
Sony Xperia X1

If you want an almost direct iPhone competitor:

HTC Touch HD

Viva la WinMo!!!

Ermmm lets not discount the new Blackberry storm/thunder thats coming out very soon. If anything the Storm/Thunder is a copycat iphone, same sort of dimensions ie shape etc. Not only that its a blackberry so its pretty certain that its going to knock the living daylights out of the iphone. Its due out end of oct and as far as i know, Voda have the exclusivity on it in this country but ill probably get one sim free depending on prices.

Other than the blackberry, your only other choices are the Omnia, Touch Diamond and Touch HD. The touch diamond, i have one but wouldnt really consider it an iphone type of phone tbh but its a great device because of its compact size. The touch HD is definitely an iphone type of phone much like the new Blackberry thunder/storm. Looks very similar size and dimensions wise.

The iphone could have been a great phone but Apple decided to leave a few basic features out sadly...personally i wouldnt look at the iphone now that you have the ones listed in this thread...the iphone is fast becoming a very dated phone if anything.

I just ordered a HTC Touch Pro, hope I'm not dissapointed! was thinking about waiting for the HD version but I gave in! :3

Would you say the Touch HD would beat the Samsung and Apple's Iphone in terms of functions (Camera etc..)

That's what I'm hoping!

They do look very tempting but I'll wait to compare it with the HD I think, it's not on orange at the moment anyways. I'm in no rush, my HTC touch still does the job ok.

Please let us know how you get on.

I'm currently looking at this myself, my personal blackberry contract is up so I'm considering what to get for the next year and I've consequently spent much of today trying out as many different options as possible...

My conclusions are...

Windows mobile still sucks. I just can't get on with anything running it, I've owned two windows mobile devices in the last few years (good ones at that) and I've replaced both before the contract was out as they were just so bloody annoying.

The iphone is a good phone. I really can't find anything to rival it at the moment, the few weaknesses people keep highlighting I don't care about...

bad camera - all phone cameras are bad compared to a £200 point and shoot, I want a camera, I'll take my camera with me - and actually I don't think the iphone camera is too bad, looks decent enough quality on screen despite being poor on paper.

no mms - don't use mms, none of my friends use mms, can't understand why you'd want to myself, obviously it's something only the kids get.

No tomtom or such for GPS - again, if I want a turn by turn GPS, my car has one. Google maps does the job for walking around, which is when I want it...

Right now, despite swearing recently I wasn't going to get an iphone, I think I may well simply because it's the best for what I want (I already have a .mac account which helps I guess).

The only question is, wait and see the Sony Xperia thingy (looks nice in videos but it is windows mobile and that slide out keyboard is really going to make it a bit bulky) or the blackberry storm/thunder/whatever it's called today...that I think might be worth waiting for, I do like my blackberrys in general, the curve was a little slow but my 8800 has been fantastic...

Just spotted the Touch 3G is due the same time as the Touch HD. It seems more like my kind of phone, the HD is as big as an iphone which is too big for me really.

I can't find out if Orange is going to have these though.

Which networks will be carrying the Touch HD? I was heavily leaning towards the iphone, but looking at the Touch HD I'm not so sure.
