..a 04 Reg Seat Leon Cupra R 225 with 71000 on the clock and in good nick.

Firstly can anyone suggest what I might get for the above car at:

a) a dealer
b) independant garage
c) privately

please?

Next I need something to replace it with. I am newly self employed as an IT consultant and don't really know what mileage a year I will be doing. It could be low or high.

I want something that is

Hatchback,
Good MPG,
Moderately quick (not LCR quick but nothing dead slow)
5 door preferably and around the same size as the LCR or slightly bigger.
Low road tax

As I don't know what my yearly income will be I need something that is going to cost a lot less than the LCR to run (e.g. petrol/diesel costs primary concern, servicing and consumable like tyres are secondary). We may be living of the wife's income for a while until I get established.

Total budget including trade in from LCR is about £7000 max. Preferably I'd like to get it with just the trade in value of the car.

Unfortunately it's not quite within your price range but I am really liking the Integra DC5 at the moment. You could have course go for a Civic Type R. I've heard both of these return circa 40mpg on a run when out of Vtec. Combined mpg isn't to shabby either.

There will be a big difference in the power delivery on both of these compared to what you are used to. The DC5 is damn quick as long as you work the gears. I know people go on about the lack of torque but compared to all other N/A 2.0 litre hot hatches I dont think there is that much difference. I have a pug 306 gti6 at the moment and that only has 155ft/lb of torque peak. The Vtec torque curve builds up pretty quickly and is a lot flatter than that on non variable valve engines.

I also like the fact that you dont see to many DC5's on the road and I think they look amazing too. This car is high up on my next car list alongside the Renault F1 R26. The Renault is way out of your price range at the moment though. I just cant decide which power delivery I shall prefer out of the Teg and Meg!

Edit: Just read you want low road tax. I'm assuming the above cars will be abour £205 per year so prob to much. Looks like you may be wanting to go diesel.

This is obviously designed to be a cost saving excercise given unstable income and unpredictable mileage. A type R honda isn't going to be massively cheaper to run than an LCR! I think something more like a reasonably engined saloon or hatch, perhaps with a reasonably reliable derv engine would be more along the lines or even just a standard 2l petrol.

I might be off the mark though :)
 
not really my area of expertise, but Passat, Mondeo (potentially problematic though, i know the 1.8 TDCI is unrelaible but dont know about the 2.2 in the ST TDCI), octavia, volvo etc are perhaps good starting points a volvo would be high up my list

u know what, tom has some better points than me and i must say my dads octavia is a nice place to be (ive not driven it tho)

I had a volvo s40 and i loved it, but i didnt have the derv, but it was a nicer place to be than my brothers mondeo or focus
 
I like the look of the Octavia and Volvo S40. Can't believe I'm forced into this. Hopefully the business will take off and I'll have something fun again before too long :D
 
Seriously, just get a diesel Leon.
You know what you're getting with one. The engine is very reliable. The only issues you'll have with either be turbos, boost pipes or the usual Leon-related stuff like leaks, etc.
