Somone crashed in to my car & left a note

Cat D is "repairs (and other costs) will cost a good chunk of the car's value", so about 60-70%, Cat C is when the repairs will cost more than the car's value. Cat B is "proper borked, should only be stripped for parts" and Cat A cars should basically just be nuked from orbit.

how does that work in the case of Noel Edmonds who demanded the exact same car when his was written off? they then re-built a brand new mclaren f1 at a cost of like £10 million when it was probably only insured for £300K?

figures may be out slightly.

I'm not sure you can compare a 10 YO ford to a car where only 70 were built.

It was Rowan Atkinson that had the F1 rebuilt after a crash. It was more like 1 million to repair it so a fraction of what it's worth. It was done by McLaren themselves, so probably ended up better than new. He still managed to sell it for about 8 million.

He used it as a daily run around apparently :D

The only bit of that you got right was that was that there was an insurance claim.

This.

All I know is that when someone dented my front wing, and put the tiniest of scratches on the front bumper, the cost of the repair was £1750. The wing part only cost £300 of this. On top of this was the insurance company having to give me a hire car for a week.

Looking at yours, the wing obviously needs replacing, and they may well replace the door as it is bent around the edges. Then they'll spray the door and wing, plus blending it into the rear quarter, bonnet and bumper. Yeah, my guess is that there's a good £2500 damage there if they replace the door, probably £1750 if they don't - in which case, they will probably write the car off.

Seeing irrational posts like the OP's is the reason why a lot of people don't leave their details when they clip your car. On a low value, bog standard 10 year old Ford Focus, most people would have just gone to a local spray shop where they would have replaced the wing and sprayed it for £500 all in. Now after asking for advice, then instantly dismissing it - the OP may well have his sentimental car written off, with increased premium for him for the next five years, and the chap who was kind enough to leave his details.

Exactly. It sounds to me like the OP is just trying to be punitive for the sake of it.

It was just like the last guy that posted up about 2 weeks ago. Everyone told him it was probably only a SMART repair at £100 or so and his response was "I don't want him to get away with it that easily" then tried to justify being an A-hole to the bloke because the car had "sentimental value" and "it was his fault he was careless".

In this day and age, I'd literally be so grateful if someone dented my car and left a note saying sorry with their details. And as a reward for their honesty, I would try everything I could to keep the costs to them down. Some people feel the need to inflict financial penalties on people for making an honest mistakE, even though they've done the right thing afterwards when the wrong thing would have been much easier to do. In which case - a lot of people will ask, what is the incentive?

Can an admin lock this post please, a bit tired of being told im a horrible person for using something i pay monthly for... Only wanted advice in regards to what i could do should he evade me.

I'm not being unreasonable, the car is damaged, the door won't open and i can't trust him to pay me cash, therefore my only option is insurance, that is the end of it.. Car is picked up on Tuesday, Courtesy car will be delivered to my house and the repair shouldn't take long after that.

What do you mean by "pay monthly for"?

You ask for advice
People give you advice
You ignore it
Get upset
Ask to get thread locked.

You're being unreasonable

What a reply from the OP.

I hope your insurance premiums go up a good whack for not taking the sensible and courteous option. Instead you have now also forced the person who tried to sort it in the best way for both of you to a price hike also.

Disgusting behavior to be honest and entirely shows why people dont leave notes, because they get people like you.

I think this is the first time I've seen everyone in motors agree on something and not turn it into a 10 page argument.

The OP is within their right to go through insurance and there can be good reasons.

However, their reasons are terrible in this thread as well as criticising someone who is trying to do the right thing, because they didn't respond back to them in 20 seconds.

Lots of people prefer to go through their insurance for small claims. One example is a neighbour who hit a pothole in an old Fiesta and a spring broke, plus a bit of other damage. He got his breakdown company to recover him and the car, then spoke to his insurers who said he could claim accidental damage. He knew I worked in motor insurance and asked for advice, saying it's time he bought a new car anyway. Should he claim or pay for the repairs himself?

He had 3 years gen ncd and 350 xs, I advised he'll pay the excess, get stepped back to one year ncd and pay a loaded premium for the next 3-5 years, plus the car is only worth £750, so my advice was don't claim, get the car fixed as cheaply as possible and chop it in for a new car.

Yes you've guessed it he claimed then part exed for a new car, so had to pay for a loaded premium on a much higher value car which is discounted less. His reasoning was "he didn't want to mess about".

I often get asked for advice outside work regarding insurance. Some people follow my suggestions and some dont, but I don't get angry or frustrated, not any more. It's their decision.
