Does anyone know how quiet the Antec SonataII case is? I've got one ordered and planned to stick some Hitachi/Maxtor SATA HDD in it, and some DVD drives, along with an AMD64 with retail cooler and a decent graphics card. Anyone with experience with this case know what its like for silence, and audio dampening?

Also, I have a 959NF Samsung 19" CRT monitor, but its *ugh* beige...brilliant monitor but the colour sucks. I have some old Citadel colour spray paints (back from when I used to collect Warhammer about 6 years back) and was wondering, if I covered the glass screen, and the vents etc, would it be okay to spray the monitor black, so it would match the rest of my new system which I'm building, and then put some clear spray varnish on the top to protect it, or would I perhaps not even need to cover the vents if I made sure I didnt spray directly into them?

The spraying the monitor you really should remove the plastic casing from it first if possible, otherwise your running the risk of killing the monitor.

And the Sonata II is one of the quietest cases on the market. You can also buy after market noise dampening kits for it, making it even quieter.

Depends completely on the monitor, Could remover the front of the old Relysis CRT I had.

I can not really comment on your monitor, as I do not know it.

Yeh getting onto that now, monitors will hold a charge for a VERY long time, you need to be really careful when doing it.

And also, remember I am not responsible for what you do with this! At your own risk.

Not really, as getting paint on the internals is a very bad thing to do.

Personally get a new monitor ;)

I am trying to think of another alternative, spraying a monitor without removing the casing has bad idea written all over it.

And removing you just have to be careful not to touch any electronics.

no, most definately not! spray paint is nearly a liquid, it'll conduct across the large charge inside the case of the monitor and most likely break it.

just be very careful, you shouldnt need to get close to the electronics inside the monitor, and usually they are shrouded anyways (depends how old the monitor is)

The monitor is about 1/2 yrs old. I cant afford to get another monitor, and this monitor doesnt come in black anyway afaik.
To protect the vents, I was thinking of taping cling film over them, but as it seems to be suggested I will try spraying the case off the monitor, and then putting the internals back inside the case.

How would you suggest handling a monitor outside of the case? Touch internals with plastic gloves on, set them down away from the case, spray the case, and varnish it, give it 20 mins to dry, and then put internals back in the case?

Maybe give it a bit more than 20 minutes, at least before turning on.

But that is generally how I would do it, just remember to be careful with the insides of the monitor. I can not stress that enough.

Also before and after pics are required :p

If you're not confident about stripping the casing off the monitor and you can't afford a new one, then DON'T DO IT!

Take it down to a TV repair shop and have them take the case off. Then take the case back and have it refitted once it's been sprayed.

Also, speaking from personal experience, most home modding looks pretty poor and ruins it's second hand value. I generally find that it's better to sell unwanted kit and buy something else rather than attempt a bodge. You may be better with your hands than me, but I still wouldn't ever recommend modding anything you can't afford to replace.

Sprayed a few moniters black and their fairly simple to take apart. As stated above don't touch anything inside, but there's usualy enough room to easily gat to the screws to remove the front without getting close to anything.
For spraying rub down with some fine wet & dry paper and then get it as clean as possible, spray a few LIGHT coats of plastic primer on waiting about 10 mins or so between coats. Once the primer is dry say 10-15 mins after spraying last coat then its time for the black coat. Again do about 3-4 light coats, if you try to do too much too soon you'll get runs and ruin it, allowing time for the coats to dry inbetween. Depending on the finish you want you can then apply a few coats of clear lacquer in the dame way as above - coats can be slightly thicker with lacquer but watch for runs.
Once finished allow at least a few hours or overnight if you can before putting it back togeather as if you rush it the paint won't be fully off and you'll either get finger prints all over it and/or scratch it to death.
As said if your not fully confident in your ability then don't try it unless your willing to accept the possibility that it can all go horribly wrong and you end up with a black mess as a moniter, but if you take your time its a great way of mayching your moniter in with the rest of your system for the sake of £15 quid or so for the paint and a day playing with spray paint.

Yeah, right now I'm trying to get the case off the monitor, its an awkward sod, hencer I've posted in the Monitor forum if anyone knows how to do it. Forgot to take a picture of the base before spraying though... DOH! Have sonme pics opf the monitor though so will show monitor before picture (so you can see the colour before) then show you the resprayed base so you can see the new colour :)

You can probably imagine how bad a beige monitor would go with black and blue mouse, black keyboard, black and silver speakers and black case though...

Wanted to get a monitor in black at the time, however the 959 wasnt available in any but beige. Luckily for me, the paints I have are designed for use on plastics, being modelling spray paints, and the surface of the base and casing are slightly textured too, so the pain seems to be bonding nicely :)

Am just finishing off actual spraying of the bass before spray varnishing it, apart from being slighly stiff on the moveable joints, the base is looking fine, as its a nice matt black spray with a slight shine to it, and the varnish is matt too so it should end up a nice black with a slight sheen :)

Ooo hope it has all turned out ok :)

Although we really could do with some pictures, or if im speaking for myself, I could really do with some pictures!

If done well it could look better than a manufacturers black.

I can show you the base very soon, still examining the main part of the monitor, to work out the best way to get off the case, bloody nice monitor, bloody awkward design lol... just waiting for the varnish on the base to dry, then you'll see the colour I'm coming up with :)
