I bought a Sony RX 100 compact camera before the 24th Dec and i sent off all the relevant details but i have just received the letter from Sony saying they wont honer it becuase of there i got it from

i bought it from UK Digital

What do you think of this?

Best get onto them then.

If they aren't much help, talk to your credit card company.

not sure if UK digital have done anything wrong? but im thinking of emailing them and asking for money back due to "Grey import" product

whats the pros and cons for grey imports?

Same product, probably came from same factory, it's just was destined to another part of the world. Then a third party, not Sony Europe, imported here.

Plus side is cheaper price for you.

Down side is you might have to pay for repairs if it breaks as bodies are often only valid locally. So if your camera was from the US then you will either have to send it to Sony US to get it fixed for free or pay Sony UK the repair bill.

That is the risk you take when buying a grey import.

If you bought it from a UK supplier, it should be a UK model, if not, they shouldn't be selling a grey import in this country. It might also be worth checking the warranty papers, as Sony usually have information that is locked to a certain region of the world.... or at least it used to be, I've not bought a Sony product for a while.

If UK Digital is this website: http://www.ukdigital.co.uk

Their policy even states:
"Selling only UK / European stock you can buy with confidence. All products purchased are covered by their respective manufacturers warranties. We are also members of Safebuy web code of practice. They are an independent UK organisation which monitors websites, their terms of sale and trading history."

So I would contact them to explain that Sony has refused your camera to find out what is going on. I would be calm about it, rather than your first contact being threatening them. Might also be useful if you can get some more information from Sony.

Generally if the warranty is anything other than the manufacturers basic one, and it's not a particularly reputable dealer (so not like John Lewis offering an extended warranty), then it means the warranty is provided by a company such as Mack, which should generally set off alarms that this might be a grey import.

Thanks guys

in the letter it says

Reused becuase

My profuct has not been supplied or distributed by Sony United Kingdom Limited

Ah then it might be European stock. If you're within 7 days you can return it, no questions asked (assuming its not broken). If not, kick up a stink with UK Digital. I'm not sure what their customer service is like but it's worth a shot to try and get a refund.

i bought it on the 21s Dec. and Sony have only just responded to my letter :(

Was the cashback advertised on the UK Digital product page?

no it wasent

How much was it? And why are you so disparately need the cashback? Was it the reason you bought the camera?

Does Sony T&C says only authorised dealers eligible?

I bought a Sony 35mm f1.8 for someone from Jessops on Dec 3rd and got my cashback through a couple of weeks ago no problem.
