Sony KDL40EX403, Sharp LC40LU700, or Samsung LE40C530?

I've got the HT-S3305. Bought it off the recommendations of people here after my Samsung system gave up and got sent back to where I bought it. It's brilliant, so much better than the Samsung it's unreal.

My cheapo sony 5.1 system has a delay option, You should be safe. I think you should go for the Sony tbh,

Mine only gets used with the ps3, GT5 gets hammered and all is fine.. Had loads of people over playing it (I got it early) and no one has mentioned anything. Blu-rays look great and SD ain't bad either (For a LCD)

Which version have you got? 32" or 40"? 401 or 403?

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like the only complaint about the Sony is the 40ms, and with it not an issue in racing games and easily compensated for in a half decent AV Reciever it looks to be the best bet.

Now... to get a TV, Reciever, 5.1 speakers and PS3 aproved by the missus 3 weeks from moving house... wish me luck! :)

Get the sony - I have a KDL-32EX403 and a KDL-40EX503 and have never had any problem playing games on either.

I have the KDL40EX503 mate. Which apparently has a 60ms input lag,

You really won't have any problems with the KDL40EX403

I've got a KDL40EX403, never really noticed any input lag while using the component cable but i haven't really been playing many games that you'd notice it on. You could use VGA input as this doesn't go through Bravia engine

Don't know about input lag, but back in July, I bought a 32" Samsung C530 to use as my main PC monitor. No matter how much I tried to adjust the picture, I could never get a sharp image. I took it back and bought the Sony EX403 and the picture is infinitely better.

I do game on the PC, but don't really play 1st person shooters much, so I don't notice input lag.

I saw the Sony and Samsung in Comet the other day. I'm not sure if it was the setup, but the picture on the Sony was much better over the Samsung.

Darker blacks. After seeing both side by side, I got the Sony.

Slight thread derail but shops are notoriously bad for comparing image quality because 99% of the time they'll stick on all the 'effects' and turn the brightness up to 100% in order for the TV to have more of a 'wow' look, which obviously helps sell them to people who will probably never touch the settings anyway. To anyone who is used to tweaking the settings of their TVs to try and get to as natural and accurate picture as possible, shop displays look overly bright, overly saturated and often have that 'video camera' effect going on if they're playing DVDs or Blu Rays from frame creation effects being turned on. When you take the TV home, where the lighting is completely different and you're not surrounded by other TVs, the image will be completely different. /my 2 cents.

Well, finally managed to get my TV (Sony KDL40EX403U) from City Link; they proved themselves unable to actually deliver it to me on several occasions, so I lost patience and drove the 30 miles to their depot in Bicester earlier this afternoon.

First impressions: It's huge. It completely dominates the room compared to the Samsung 26" it's replacing. To an extent it's actually a bit too big for where it's located and the unit I've got it on, but that's not really much of an issue at the moment.

Auto set-up was very easy and straightforward, the usual settings for language, time/date, then searching for channels. Sadly I don't get Freeview in my flat (so no Freeview HD either), and my analogue signal is rubbish.

It uses the same XMB menu system that's used on many other Sony devices (and of course, the PS3 and PSP), and it works very well. It's very smooth and fluid, nicely animated with some nice audio feedback too. Plenty of options to play with, and rather than having a large printed manual, the majority of the instructions are available as an interactive guide on the TV itself.

I've had a bit of a play around with the internet functionality it offers, and it seems rather good. Five on Demand has a lot on offer, loads quickly and playback/seeking is very smooth with pretty good picture quality. iPlayer is on there too, but it appears to use a different player to FoD which is a bit clunkier and slower. Still, it's nice to have the features there. It's also got many other content channels such as Sky News, a Fashion channel and more, but I've yet to try those.

The complaints regarding response time in gaming are, in my opinion, not an issue. This evening I've played Bad Company 2 for a couple of hours, and Splinter Cell Conviction, and at no time did it feel like there was any lag present, at least compared to my experiences with my previous Samsung. Even when I was deliberately looking for any signs of lag, I couldn't detect any. Absolutely not an issue as far as I'm concerned, and I'm glad I didn't let it influence my decision to buy this particular model.

All in all, I'm very impressed. It's got lots of nice features and options, such as assigning custom names and icons to various inputs, and a Quick Startup setting that supposedly allows the TV to start-up faster at times of the day you set, or you can let it learn according to when you use it.

Haven't given it a proper go with any Blu-rays or anything yet so consider this a first impressions review only, but so far I'm very happy with it. Even happier with the price; after I get the VAT back from Sony and sell my Samsung to a friend's sister, it'll have cost me £250.

Sorry to hijack, but i've been looking at the EX403 myself but i came across a few threads on avforums where a number of people have noticed banding during fast action shots, pans etc. Just wondering if anyone has spotted it?

I have the Sony 40". I am no TV expert but did quite a bit of research before buying. I think its a fantastic TV for the money and feature set. Unfortunately I cannot use the freeview HD as we live in a flat with a shared aerial (this can stop you picking up freeview HD)

The DNLA function is fantastic - I have run a Ethernet cable to the PC and can now browse all the content on there. You need to use a DNLA server if you want to stream video in anything other than the native formats that the TV recognises (which admittedly isnt many) but using PS3 Media Server it just works flawlessley - even with 1080p
content!

Not sure how much it is now - i got if for £400 when at the time, there wasn't a better TV for the money.

Well this sucks. Looks like the EX403 is either out of stock or being replaced by the EX503 (which is £700!). Im struggling to find the EX403 for anything under £500.

However, I have just found the PANASONIC TX-P42U20B for £499. I had dismissed Plasma as being out of budget, especially for a full 1080p set, but this 42" just poped up.

I know nothing abotu Plasma. What is this TV like, especially in comparison to the 40" Sony EX403 for similar money (same usage, Films, HD TV, PS3. All in a living room with normal living room lighting)

Noticed this thread and bought at 530 (40 inch one) earlier and had to take it back immediately as it was dead on arrival lol. Box was battered in as well so no wonder really. The replacement though is a seriously good TV and the picture quality is really good. Currently watching predator on film 4 at the moment and the picture looks very good for the price I paid! (380 quid... :D)

I would say though, use the movie preset as it really does look more natural than the standard settings which are awful. I used the tv as a monitor also via my 5870s HDMI and the picture quality on the movie mode made it look identical to my samsung 22inch monitor.

PS3 looks seriously good on it and the HD quality in general is top notch. I avoided the 580 due to the advice in this thread about the 24p being dodgy lol
