Well, finally managed to get my TV (Sony KDL40EX403U) from City Link; they proved themselves unable to actually deliver it to me on several occasions, so I lost patience and drove the 30 miles to their depot in Bicester earlier this afternoon.
First impressions: It's huge. It completely dominates the room compared to the Samsung 26" it's replacing. To an extent it's actually a bit too big for where it's located and the unit I've got it on, but that's not really much of an issue at the moment.
Auto set-up was very easy and straightforward, the usual settings for language, time/date, then searching for channels. Sadly I don't get Freeview in my flat (so no Freeview HD either), and my analogue signal is rubbish.
It uses the same XMB menu system that's used on many other Sony devices (and of course, the PS3 and PSP), and it works very well. It's very smooth and fluid, nicely animated with some nice audio feedback too. Plenty of options to play with, and rather than having a large printed manual, the majority of the instructions are available as an interactive guide on the TV itself.
I've had a bit of a play around with the internet functionality it offers, and it seems rather good. Five on Demand has a lot on offer, loads quickly and playback/seeking is very smooth with pretty good picture quality. iPlayer is on there too, but it appears to use a different player to FoD which is a bit clunkier and slower. Still, it's nice to have the features there. It's also got many other content channels such as Sky News, a Fashion channel and more, but I've yet to try those.
The complaints regarding response time in gaming are, in my opinion, not an issue. This evening I've played Bad Company 2 for a couple of hours, and Splinter Cell Conviction, and at no time did it feel like there was any lag present, at least compared to my experiences with my previous Samsung. Even when I was deliberately looking for any signs of lag, I couldn't detect any. Absolutely not an issue as far as I'm concerned, and I'm glad I didn't let it influence my decision to buy this particular model.
All in all, I'm very impressed. It's got lots of nice features and options, such as assigning custom names and icons to various inputs, and a Quick Startup setting that supposedly allows the TV to start-up faster at times of the day you set, or you can let it learn according to when you use it.
Haven't given it a proper go with any Blu-rays or anything yet so consider this a first impressions review only, but so far I'm very happy with it. Even happier with the price; after I get the VAT back from Sony and sell my Samsung to a friend's sister, it'll have cost me £250.
