Sony delays PS3 motion controller launch
By Robin Harding in Tokyo

In a blow to its resurgent Playstation 3, Sony said on Wednesday that it will delay the launch of a motion-sensing controller for the games console from spring to autumn 2010.

The delay means the PS3 motion controller will have to go head-to-head with Microsoft’s ‘Project Natal’ motion controller for the Xbox 360, which is due for launch in time for Christmas 2010.

The setback will also raise concerns that, after a strong recent performance, Sony may repeat errors made after the PS3’s launch, when products such as its ‘Playstation Home’ online service were repeatedly delayed.

Sony said that the delay was not due to any hardware design or manufacturing problem, but because it wanted to have enough games ready that use the controller to drive its sales.

If thats true its for the best I guess - Im not waiting with baited breath for this since I honestly think proper gaming will never go down this road and this is more a hiccup until it finds it proper niche...

The sixaxis motion control is a good example of this...

Well if it's true that they just want more games to be available by launch, then I see no problem with this.

Would be a waste for a new peripheral to come out but have no games (or only a couple) to use it with.

The sixaxis is epic for sniping in Killzone 2

This looks just as awful as Natal. I'll will eat my hat though if either of them turn out more than a slightly enhanced Wii type gimmick.

This is another disaster. It needed the spring launch to get a footing before Natal launches. I can see Joe Public seeing the PS3 'arc' as just a Wii thing but Natal is different.

Will be funny though - RE5 director's edition still coming out in spring? Ooops. We have no controller to play it with.

I don't see this or Natal really kicking off massively among anyone who takes games seriously. Who wants to stand and jump around like a wally while playing Call of Duty 7 or something. They are both just really gimmicky, designed to tap into the market that the Wii has already dominated. Every man and his dog has a Wii, but how often do they use them? I'd put money on it that a lot of Wii's that have been bought are just sat in a cabinet or on a shelf collecting dust.

It's great for parties but after that novelty factor wears off it gets quite tedious and boring. Neither Natal nor the Motion Controller for the PS3 will take off in the way that the Wii has in my opinion. The Wii is cheap, cheaper than the price of Natal and a new 360 I bet and has a much more family friendly image than both. I think Nintendo already has too big a hold on the market for either of the other to make any massive profits from this motion sensing technology. If a lot of the people who own Wii's hardly play with them then why are they going to go out and buy a £200+ PS3 + the motion control + the games to go with it? Same with the 360, why are they going to go and buy one?

But I also think that whole experience will happen with the wand - will be the in thing to add into certain games, annoy people for being there (without a normal alternative perhaps) either because its poorly implemented or just saturating the games at the time. Eventually it will find its niche and become a welcome addition and when a game does support it rather than being an annoyance it will be a nice 'change' (i.e. KZ2 valve openings)

@mcwildcard - youre wierd :p...

P.S. Cant think of any car game where sixaxis works adquately...

I think you over-exaggerate Natals real anticipation - especially now it seems the hardware isnt as capable any more.

Joe Public will just see it as an alternative control method to a normal controller just like the Wii is, then buy it, play it, bin it...

Natal/Wand are just plain gimmicks and until theres a real definite association with how this tangibly improves the gaming experiences its only tech heads like us that will be predominately interested (more for the potential of it, rather than its eventual application it seems)

I hope I have. I'm really rooting for Sony (don't we British all love the underdog, :D ) so I'm hoping Microsoft get egg on their face with this but if anyone can steamroller this in, they can.

Fine with me, the more titles available for it on release means reviewers will get a better idea of whether it's actually any good or not so i don't have to waste my money.
