I have been looking at replacing my current Sony AV Receiver with something a little more up to date and i want to get another Sony as i like the integration between the PS4 and 50W829 TV i have.

I was looking at getting a DN850 Sony as it's recently just been released and has some good reviews but it's got me thinking about maybe just getting last years better model, the DN1040, for less money.

Is the 1040 better than the 850, any features in the 850 that are new to this year?

EDIT - Could even go for the 840 and save some more money.

Off the top of my head the DN850 (and 1050) have bluetooth and adds Spotify streaming support. Plus the usual waffle of improved sound quality via little tweaks. DN1040 has more grunt, more HDMI inputs/outputs and (limited) zone 2 functionality.

I bought the DN1040 as an upgrade from a 10 year old Sony QS a few months ago. Very pleased with it so far.

Which speakers will you be using?

I'm using 20+ year old Monitor Audio floor standers and with 3 more smaller Monitor Audio for centre and rear. Old but sound great.

I'm currently using a a Sony DA1200ES, love the sound but no HDMI audio.

Main things I need are BI-AMP, Airplay, Nice Menu, HDMI sound.

I have an 840, the only thing it seems to lack is a good gui. But once its set up that's done. Been impressed by it so far great for films and games, seems more than powerful enough.

I'd go with the 1040 then.

One potentially show stopping thing for existing Sony owners - they got rid of the blue light indicating multichannel decoding. The swines!

Same here when Ray got his DN1040. Then Richer Sounds cut the price shortly after and I impulse bought. :D

The old DB790 will be going in the spare room when I get around to acquiring some speakers for it...

Had mine since late November/early December now. It has been flawless I have to say. I have no hesitation to buy it again if I am in the market today.

Hmmmm so is the 1040 still a better receiver than the new 2014 850?

And yeah, the blue light is awesome on my current.

Yeah, the low-end is the biggest difference from my old Sony. Massive Attack's Mezzanine at 25 had the upstairs neighbour commenting on the low end. :D

I've bi-amped the fronts which might be part of it...

I'm happy with my 840 (after it was repaired under warranty due to faulty HDMI board), I'll echo the GUI comments but once it's set-up you don't really need to go back in.

Yeah, the 840 has a very basic DOS-like OSD. The 850 has the same shiny OSD as the 1040/1050.
