Sony STR-DN1040 or DN850?

I dot have that hum, actually put my ears to it after reading this, perhaps you can try it in a different part of the house, just plug in and see?

I can't hear it, then again it's in the same room as a fish tank. External filter creates a low level of background noise which likely covers it, if it does hum.

Does anyone know if the Sony amps (or any other make) have video overlay of settings and adjustments such as when you change volume, change surround mode etc?

I need this as the Amp is in a different room to the TV and at the moment I keep having to walk round to check everytime I change a setting.

Rang up Richer Sounds about the 50/60Hz hum and no questions asked they're sending a new one out and swapping them around for me! Excellent service from them! First time dealing with them and not going to be the last now! Fantastic.

Hopefully the new one is silent but judging by other peoples reports on the internet, replacement seem the same...

Yeah, what Ray says.

The headphone jack works nicely with my unknown ohm-age £50 Sennheisers ... but I'm using it as an AV receiver first and foremost. It's not a £350 headphone amp. There are no details for the headphone output in the specs that I can see.

Suggest you email Sony.

New amp turned up but it does the same thing...makes me think it's just the way the amp is...

Take a listen here and see what you think.

Richer Sounds have been excellent though, really bent over backwards to make sure I'm happy which is great!

The high frequency whistling effect?

I can just about hear something similar from mine when powered up, but only if my ear is a couple of inches from the amp and the fish tank filter is off. Average background noise is 42db according to the freebie app on my smartphone

There is capacitor squeal which is not so bad but the more annoying thing is the low frequency hum which fills a room when it's in situ. :(

Maybe I'm just being particularly anal about it but coming from my old amp it's a bit annoying.

Got a call back from RS and they pretty much want me to buy the 1050 now...which I'm not really going to do. I was £100 over budget with the 1040. I don't feel like the 1050 is a big leap over the 1040 and I've heard there is hum issues with those too...

Got a couple days to mull it over anyway. Shame RS is so far away.

Took the second 1040 back in person...couldn't handle the hum.

Didn't want to risk the 1050 and picked up a Yamaha RX-V777 for a really great price to replace it. The GUI is comical compared to the Sony though! :p

Sony STR-DN850 question.

So I have a 5.1 setup using Mordaunt Short Avant speakers basically...

The front pair I have allow bi-amp wiring.

So can the 850 make use of this? So I can wire up all the 5.1 speaks and bi-amp the front (left/right) ones too?

When I looked Sony's website it almost implies to bi-amp the front speakers you cannot use the rear ones?
