Sony Taking on Live

That wasnt the point, sony havent gone bankrupt over giving a free online service, (that works properly I might add) so there is no reason why they cant give a free service.

There are dozens of reasons why Sony would struggle immensely to give a free service that competes with the good parts of Live. There's a a gigantic ocean of difference between what the PS2 had, and what they are suggesting for the PS3. I don't see how you can financially compare the two.

I'm not going to pretend i'm any more business savvy than the next man here, but it's common sense to assume that if Sony really want to compete with Live they will have to charge a monthly fee to cover the huge investment involved in creating and maintaining a world-wide online community.

I have to laugh at all those who think that Sony don't stand a cat in hells chance of matching Live.
Since when have the Japanese been anything less than brilliant at copying and improving a concept of someone elses ?
What is live?
A networked server and database.

Why will Sony have problems creating the same kind of thing, they aren't going to be shy about cpying the bits everyone raves about - a friends list ...... ooooh I'll bet Sony are really concerned about that.
Downloads ...... um so what ?
Gamer points ....... a bit like exp perhaps ?

I am sure Sony will come out with something that is equal to live and probably a few innovations of their own. Not that I'll be buying a PS3. I just can not see what the big issue is with creating a service that has lives facilities. What exactly is it that is so complex about live that is not already possible in SOE EQ/EQ2 ?

I agree, and have never said they couldn't build it. It's all just whether they can implement it seemlessly into Games and dashboard ala 360. Microsoft didn't get it right first time.

No-one's really saying Sony don't stand a cat in hell's chance. This is MS's specialist area, though, and something they've been working on for a number of years.

If you're to believe suggested release dates for Sony's PS3, they've around 6 months to come up with a solution. Sony may get there eventually, but I just think this is too soon for them to provide something quite as smooth as Live! for the PS3's release.

not treating sony like idiots but MS have a much bigger budget and have obviously spent along time working on live. Sony seem to be trying to do this at a rather late stage considering the console was spose to be out soon now they are trying to add new things. Seems quite late to be doing it which is why people are skeptical if it was announced from the beginning people wouldnt be so negative towards it. As all developers working for MS knew Live was gonna be there they have had time to work with it. Where as unless sony decided along time ago they was doing this it seems like an extra strain the developers could do without considering they are all saying how difficult it is to code for.

I was under the impression that the PS3 is still a year away (or is now).

The features isn't the problem, hell, I could single-handedly write software in 6 months that offers all the same features. Features aren't the difficult part.

Polish is one exceedingly difficult part, the system has to be usable by the most computer-illiterate people out there. Microsoft have a department whose sole job is to research and test usability - its one of their biggest. Second is the integration, this is the biggest issue of all. Have you noticed how ALL the Xbox 360 games use Live (even if its a little in the case of Kong) seamlessly? How you login once, and that same login is used for all games, and you don't need to re-login when you start a new game? All the games allow the Xbox guide to open on the left pane, allowing for the user to compare their stats with other people at any time. This in itself is major for two reasons: 1 the game doesn't go mental over losing full control over the console and 2. two different applications are accessing the video card at the same time. This sounds an awful lot like Vista's 3D scheduler.

Sony will no doubt meet the features sooner or later, but they won't meet the reliability, or the integration. Anyone whose played a SOE MMO game, knows that the account management is barely centralised across all their MMOs, its a complete mess of different designs, different systems, all trying to meet common ground. Worse still is the servers running the MMOs are rebooted daily (I remember in EQ2 when they said that after the initial month or so there won't be daily restarts), and the servers can be down for extended periods of time.

Chances are that behind the scenes, Live is far, far more advanced than you actually see. A lot of features will be present, but just not utilised. It wall also be very expandable, and anyone in the software bizz knows that quickly developed (and/or designed) applications are very difficult to expand upon.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people are expecting it to surface this side of 2007, in the states and Japan at least. Sony were first towting a Spring 2006 release.

I'm with you though. I don't think we will see it in 2006.

It remains to be seen how things will pan out, but I think it might show that PS3's live! equivalent has been added as an afterthought, whilst Live! has always been an integral part of the development of the 360.
