Sony unlocks 70mb of additional Ram for devs

It's rare for a console to get a spec upgrade in the middle of its life. However, Sony has stealthily upgraded the PS3 over the past few months to unlock additional usable RAM for developers. Much like the PSP received a boost in clock speed, the latest firmware updates provide developers an additional 70MB of RAM to work with. The change was initially discovered by PlayStation University, noting the reduction in the system OS's memory footprint, from 120MB to 50MB. As the OS continues to slim down, developers are allowed access to even more usable system memory.

Sounds pretty good. I don't think its going to mean that games will suddenly be 100x better but at least its something

70mb is a huge amount. The PS3 only has use of 256mb for everything on the random access memory side of things. That's nearly a third of the PS3's memory freed up for the games. It's a pretty big deal.

Sweet, that's really cool - I'm surprised by that OS footprint reduction! 70MB is a lot considering the system RAM is only 256MB (iirc).

Good news for Uncharted 3, Killzone 3 etc. :D

They're clearly getting to grips with the software - all the added features to the XMB over time, and it's getting smaller too. The lower memory requirement means it loads fast too.

Thinking about it though, it does seem a bit suspect that only half the system RAM was made available to games... BS maybe?!

Developers have griped about the low amount of free memory before. When you're developing to a specific hardware configuration though, it's not as limiting as it sounds.

This tbh, because of the way Sony set up the ram allocation, 70mb freed up in one section is huge.

Ive heard its going to help keep constant frame rates. I wonder if it will help with existing games with a patch or will they have to do the whole game from scratch to take advantage?

zzzzzz a whole 70mb wow, it will take devs ages to optimise this, anyway the ps3 has nothing worth buying until turismo eventually comes out

I see you're relatively new to the console games & hardware forum :)

not really been here years, just dont see why this is a big deal, as far as im concerned the PS3 has nothing to offer gamers that already have a blu ray player, and yes I did have a PS3 it gathered dust for 6 months before I sold it
