Our Shepard had ticks a few weeks back but we managed to get rid of them and took him to the vets, we got antibiotics for the inflamed skin and that has all now cleared up. However since we noticed the ticks he has been biting on his back near his tail very often.

I inspected it to find a very red, sore looking part of his skin.

Here is a picture, we cut away the fur to make it easier to clean and stop it getting to hot. Made it a spoiler to stop people whining.

My mother has said she won't take him to the vets for a few more days to see if it heals with regular cleaning. He keeps biting at it and it's extremely difficult to stop him doing so all the time.

Does anyone have any idea what it may be? What may have caused it and if there is any way of treating it and making it less painful for him?

Thanks, Antony.

Thread title and Op's spelling dissapointing

Oh the irony.

I, too, was expecting some kind of canine aviation malarkey. I am disappoint. You could always get some antibiotic cream from your local pet shop to see if it improves, and if not then see the vet.

We have some powder for it so hopefully that helps. If it's still there after a day or two we will make a dash for the vets.

Could be a nervous thing (you know when you see a picture of a spider and suddenly feel something), he's feeling the slightest thing and going after that tick again even though its not there.

The vet is the best guy to ask, might be a secondary condition (or simply fleas) irritating the previous soreness. He can sort you out with a cone of the correct size and advise on care of the new wound too. I wouldn't bother trying to stop him biting it any other way, you won't manage it.

The ticks where not in that area, they where on his belly. This is on his back right above his tail.

Anxiety doesn't have to make sense :)

I believe it's prime flea country there though.

He was frontlined about 3 weeks ago. Will pet shops sell the collars? We have been washing it with salty water and putting some powder on we got from the pet shop.

Also, thanks for the serous answers.

Yes, especially bigger shops like pets @ home. Obviously be careful it's not too tight and give him lots of love, dogs really ****ing hate cones.

You would be surprised, we have been doing all sorts to him since the ticks and this cut and he hasn't been bothered at all. Even putting salty water on the sore and he just lays back and lets you. Such a relaxed dog, unless you are a post man, then just run.

Feel awful though, poor dog. I guess I owe him a walk to the beach, surely the sea water will help?

Unless you can somehow sterilise the ocean, then no, don't do that.
