Now i have to decide which one, need for mp3s on go and plugging into tv for 1080p movies.... Which would you recommend?

For £300 you could get a decent portable and maybe a second hand squeezebox or similar for home use.

The ones with the best sound quality are DAPs rather than PMPs (e.g. anything by Hifiman) so Cowon is probably your best bet.

The J3 or X7 both do 1080 out from what I can google

So a cowon j3 or x7?

I assume the sound quality is the same on both, looking to pair them with Shure SE115 Sound Isolating Headphone's or should i be looking at different headphones...

Low end headphones with high quality player...
I'd go with the headphone upgrade as well.

iPods can be made into high end devices using one of two portable digital transports available (w/high end DACs), however either of them alone are more than the OP's budget, let alone an iPod to connect them to.

Can't comment on earphones but SanDisk Sansa Clip+ for £30 is as good as anything else.
Make sure you're music is highest quality too

Got the X7 160GB £225 Black Tottenham Court Road..

Speakers now considering..

Shure SE425 Been Quoted £265 or Shure SE315 Been Quoted £135. 425 over budget but are theyworth it over the 315, will 315 be good enough.

Yes both are big improvement over what i was originally going to go for.
