Hi there,

I got my hands on a dvi-hdmi cable and plugged it in to my daughters pc thinking i can get rid of her rubbish speakers. I get a picture but no sound from her tv/monitor. the motherboard is an asus p5q-vm and the gfx card is a gigabyte 4850. Is ther a way to make this work or have I wasted £2?

cheers

Will

As above, DVI doesn't carry sound.

The card needs to have HDMI in order to make use of it's sound capabilities. Although the 4 series is capable of sound, some manufacturers didn't fit HDMI sockets to certain cards. It wasn't really until the 5 series, were HDMI sockets more commonplace.

Well my ATI 4350 supports audio over DVI with a DVI to HDMI cable - no special setup, just installed the ATI drivers

Saying that, I think ATI did have a dongle that allowed DVI to carry audio from the card out and have it converted to HDMI.

My cable cost about £5 a few years ago...ATI feed audio out over DVI using spare pins I believe. I assure you, my card is nothing special - nor is the cable AFAIK
I've also used an ATI 3xxx and an ATI 5xxx, so maybe just an ATI thing?

Interesting why mine wont do it. The cable has all the DVI pins in it but AMD high definition output device says it is not plugged in, in my playback devices. I can live without it but just need to buy speakers. Anyway the graphics are far better now so not a total waste as was formerly on vga.

That's a new one one me, i thought DVI was just for video hence its name Digital Visual Interface

it is. Ati use non-standard dvi interfaces. 'Have done for years.

That's not true.

Your first post said you were using a dvi-hdmi cable - you ned to use a dvi-hdmi dongle (one that supports audio although any may work?) AND a hdmi cable. The cable alone isnt enough to support audio over dvi :)

Well I never. Next you will be telling me that VGA can support audio. :p

Apologies to the OP, for the misinformation! :o

I tried a dvi-hdmi dongle(i got this with my nvidia 470 so might not work with ati) & it never worked. It says I need a separate audio cable when I plug it in. Going to get some speakers tomorrow.

So does the Asus HD6850CU in my gaming rig to my surprise, thought it was odd when sound came out of the telly speakers during a rare PC update. :)

Had a look round in my loft & found an ATI dongle, working great now thanks all!

Gald you got it sorted :)
