Currently playing though Homeworld, and I'm after a bit of non-RTS space-based action :p

Been looking at reviews for Freespace 2, Freelancer and also Starlancer - any of them worth getting?

Whats the opinion of X3 now its been out a while? Always loved Elite so this has always tickled my fancy but reviews are mixed.

Suggest me something people! :)

If you like a challenge, then go for X3!

The challenge, however, isn't in the gameplay it's getting the bloody thing running perfectly on a high-spec machine. Ever since the 1.3 update I've had nothing but problems with X3.

Both Frontier and First Encounters can be found here -

www.eliteclub.co.uk

If you download JJFFE, First Encounters will run in Winows XP. I've had little luck with Frontier though.

Do a google on Elite : The New Kind, its a reverse engineered version of the original BBC game, with slightly improved graphics. Works great under XP, and i'd go as far as to say its the best version of Elite i have played.

There's always the free Babylon 5 games as well.

If you can afford the monthly fee, Eve Online is well worth it. There's a free 2 week trial (no CC required) if you want to try it out, at mmorpg.com (you have to register for the site I believe before you can get the trial).

Yep definitely go to http://ifh.firstones.com/

Download IFH: Danger and Opportunity (version 1.01) campaign & IFH: D&O Skirmish Pack (version 1.1) a.k.a. update.

Its a Babylon5 space combat simulator game containing 8 complete missions (including 3 training missions.

To run IFH Prequel Campaign "Danger and Opportunity" on you PC you will require:

- Windows® System 98/ME/2000/XP OS
- 800 MHz or higher CPU
- 128 MB or more of RAM
- 3D graphics card supporting OpenGL
- Approx. 220 MB of available hard drive space

find some copies of the origional x-wing and Tie fighter games or failing that get x-wing alliance the grphics may all be dated but all are stunning games. If only Lucasarts would release a proper updated version!

Another vote for X3 here.
Honestly the game is so rich that will keep you busy for month.
Must be said that it can be quite "temperamental" if you haven't got your windows installation properly set up, lots of conflict with different sound codecs. This should be sorted in the next patch.

X3 for £17 quid on read me.

Tempted to get out the old x52 stick (Currently all packed up and awaiting sale on ebay) and have a go.

Ive been thinking off buying x3 for a while, my comp played the demo pretty good but im just not sure of what the gameplay is like, is there a playable demo in the works?

Its tough to get into but very rewarding when you do, the manual is useless and theres no tutorial, but when you get to grips with all the keyboard shortcuts and start making some money the game opens up so nicely.

Personally i cheated somewhat and found the location of one of the derelict ships you can sell :D gave me a good start to buy a few things and its been awesome ever since.

The only demo is the one you downloaded, there is another one being prepare, but you should get an initial idea from the demo you have downloaded. The learning curve is steep in X3. But once you get there is a fantastic game. There are still a few bugs, worst one is the performance with certain sound codecs, but nothing too serious.

Guys can you edit your posts regarding that competitor?

Otherwise, space sims I'd reccomend are:
Freespace 2
X-Wing Alliance
TIE Fighter (If you can get it running on your system)
