Space games worth getting?

does anyone have a decent mirror to download Freespace 2 from by any chance? :) because I can't use torrents over the university network, also I am getting 6kb/s download and it will take over 20 hours to download :(

There's a site mentioned in one of the above links mentioned early in the thread which has direct, fast http:// links, but I'm not convinced about the legality; just because binary source code has been released, doesn't mean the game content (textures, sounds etc) is necessarily free to distribute.

If someone can provide proof that the game is no longer subject to copyright then I can give the direct links.

check the developers webpage, I should imagine there will still be a mention of it on there, they released it as open source because they didn't want it to die a death, and there are still so many people developing for it, even Eight? years on...

freespace 2 and freelancer.

had somethign called starlancer aswell, i was on mission 20 or somthin like that and my bro broke my cd.

never played it after that.

got x2, played it a bit. lovely gfx, dont know bout the gameplay tho seems a bit too slow for my liking.

Been playing about 7 Freespace 2 missions using fs2_open, was wondering why a couple of the big crusier ships were 'invisible', just showing thrusters and the red targeting thing.

Looking closer it would appear that I have newbed things up a bit, by simply installing fs2_open and 2 model patches (thought they had everything). On closer inspection it would appear that I need about 10 different mv_*.vp files, downloading now :)

Suprisingly good for a game from the last millenium. The control system seems good once you get used to it (I'm using mouse) and the storyline and voice acting is quite strong. Combat "feels" just right, and it looks OK with the new addons (although my peak commit charge hit 1.3gig  ).

Then again I haven't really played many modern space sims, I used to play stuff like Elite and Tie Fighter, tried a few demos like I-WAR etc, so my standards probably aren't very high. That said, I've seen plenty of people raving about FS2 on here before, saying that it is still yet to be bettered.

freespace 2 was the first pc game i got on dvd.

haven't played it for a long time but i have very fond memories of it.

and i agree with vader on the briefing guy having a superb voice, he's very commanding, gives the game an extra touch of class.

Whenever I try to play FS2 It say's 'Please Insert CD 2' when I try to start through the hangar door.

How do I sort this? Can someone do a quick step by step installation guide?

I've started to play Freespace 2 again now. What a game :D just so atmospheric and the special effects are still top notch.

I take it you've put CD2 in the drive Royality? :p

I lent my copy of FS2 to a mate and he lost one of the discs :(

I loved that game, finished it twice and the had a mess around with the mission editor too.

Can't understand why the genre has died a death recently. The next publisher to rustle up a halfway decent space combat game stands to make a killing.

Well, there is X3: The Reunion, and although a couple of years old, the MMORPG Eve still seems reasonably popular. Star Wars: Battlefront II also has some spaceship sections.

I guess the trouble is that from a technical standpoint, it's quite hard to innovate in the "Space game" genre. Space, by it's very nature, tends to be, well, a whole bunch of nothing. There's only so many licks of paint you can give a background of black with a few stars and planets dotted around, it'd not like FPS games where there is plenty of opportunity to show off your spanky new gfx engine. Regardless of whether you consider graphics important, publishers do, and hence aside from long-running series like X (over 5 years old now), it's hard for developers to land a deal I'd imagine.

In order to be successful, new game franchises need to be innovative to some degree, and the Space genre is relatively hard to innovate in. Eve has done that by adding RPG elements, maybe that's a route someone could go down on the singleplayer front possibly.

find some copies of the origional x-wing and Tie fighter games or failing that get x-wing alliance the grphics may all be dated but all are stunning games. If only Lucasarts would release a proper updated version!

definatly one of these 3 games if not them all! great space combat :)

Tried to get into Eve Online twice, both times never got passed the tutorial.
Sooo damn boring.

Wheres the combat?

The tutorial missions are about learning the controls of your ship. There are combat tutorials later on near the end of them, then it gets fun as you get a mix of courier/pirate hunting missions and that was just in my first days play. :)
