Space Shuttle Atlantis set to launch

RPM imminent - hope they show footage (if they don't, they'll probably show a recording later).

Docking in an hour.

Edit - footage. \o/

Fire alarms going off on ISS

A fire in a home on the ground is bad enough, but a fire onboard the space station. Nightmare.

Fortunately it appears to be a computer error rather than a real fire. Just as well really given that there are currently ten people on board, rather than the normal three. They're going through recovery procedures now but one of the fire extinguishers onboard was activated so they now have to deal with that as well.

This to add to the fact that the navigation computers are also malfunctioning on the Russian side of the station (the same place the fire indication came from). This means that they're having power problems on board as they can't point the solar arrays in the proper orientation. There is some suspicion that the two indicents may well be related.

I actually had a face-to-face discussion with a real Astronaut about this a few months back - it's one of the three 'nightmare' scenarios - the other two being a chemical spill and an air escape.

Edit - another alarm has now gone off. Seems to be multiple power warnings this time though (see above).

Can someone please explain why there is some sort of new TIE fighter behind the Space Shuttle? Has NASA, or worse, Dubya, discovered the dark side of the force?

:D

PS - It's actually the newly improved International Space Station

Currently travelling at 25x the speed of sound.

haha thats all relative don't forget, since the speed of sound changes ;) In orbit the shuttle does around 17,000mph

I just wish commercial jets could do that ;). 24 hour flights aren't fun. :(
