Space.

X3 Terran Conflict, just be prepared to kiss goodbye all your free time as it sucks in the unwary, & a quick game all to often turns into an 8 hour session.

X: Terran Conflict, there is a new X game coming called X: Rebirth but it's been in development for ages and there's never a set year for it coming out, nevermind a rough date. Last I read it was 2013 - at some point.

They take a bit of getting into but it's well worth it :) XTC is in my top 10 games of all time I reckon, it's a bit like single player Eve Online or Elite on a huge scale.

Probably won't be that long to wait tho might be a bit longer wait til its in the shape that everyone wants to see.

X series is epic. God knows how many hours j sunk into then but itmust be a thousand or more.

+1

Some people get it, some don't but it's a shame not to give it a few hours to see if you click with it.

Personally I felt it was very like Eve Online, but with a fast forward and pause option :D

While it's more of a strategy game, you might want to look into Homeworld too if you haven't already played it.

Kerbal Space Program? If you have time you can create some kind of combat in KSP, not the best though.. not by a long mile. Might keep you entertained while waiting for x:Rebirth.

Freelancer was a fantastic game, shame nothing has been out that has captivated me in the same way that game did. Joystick was fun to use, combat was easy and fullfilling in a laid back way, story was alright and ships looked nice. X series for me is phenominal if you have the time ( easily lost a few months into that game ) although the Combat takes some time to get used to and the game generally requires you to think, it's not as laid back as other space games.
