Spanish Football 2011-2012

I don't think they were, Spurs were comfortably beaten by two of the title favourites. Arsenal have been utterly destroyed by the current champions...

Chelsea might not have started in the same rich vein of form, but they're still winning.

LOL Barca spanking Villareal 5-0...thats a thumping:p

Barca looking too damn good as usual with the added benefit of Fabregas and Thiago now playing for them...

Don't forget Sanchez, he looked very good.

The odd thing about Fabregas, Sanchez and Thiago is they've come in to the Barca squad and first team (as they've played a few times) and they look like they've played at / with Barcelona for a long time. Scary.

Crazy to see any top flight team play with essentially 1 defender in their team. I guess if you have that much of the ball why bother? The 1-8-1 formation worked pretty well for them.

Yep and here i was thinking that Fabregas would be warming the bench but hes scored 2 goals already and from what i saw of the game...he links up so well with Messi...Thiago looks good, very good.

Scary thing about Barca is their depth now...they can rest people and still put out world class players....unbelievably good they are.

I don't know why anyone thought Fabregas would be bench warming, he's flat out better than Iniesta, he's the equal of Xavi and is a truly class player. You have to remember how brilliant he's looked for Arsenal, and some of the utter tripe in the squad with him.

Think about how good Ashley Young looked for Villa but the outcome without players to finish or link up with who were good enough, is WAY below what he was capable of. With a quality team around him he looks much better than people thought he was, same with Fabregas.

Hell he's played in three games and thats from starting with zero match fitness, being a touch out of shape, and still having a slight hamstring problem, he's apparently barely trained with them as they "manage" his hamstring recovery. Honestly he'll only get better as he gets back in the swing of things.

Football is back. :D

Tomorrows games.

Real Sociedad V Barcelona (SS4 5PM)
Real Madrid V Getafe (SS4 7PM)
Valencia V Atletico Madrid (SS4 9PM)

Not bad.

Can't believe they have put Barcelona V AC Milan as a red button match for Tuesday. What the hell?

Barca put out a very different starting XI than usual (still resting people after their joke of a pre-season), including Messi on the bench. 2-0 up in the first 15mins, Fabregas at the heart of both goals, one of which he finished himself. Pep would be mad to omit him from their first choice team, his stats are ridiculous already.

Barca started off slow last season when they lost to herc. I think with the added players, they're just trying different things.

Not that I am complaining. ;)

Their pre-season was terrible (they spent most of the time travelling and couldn't train because of the weather in some areas) and so I think they still need several players to get more work in before they can do the full 90, plus they have a couple of injuries and so on. If I was Pep I'd basically put out the same team as last year and make the odd attacking change to lower the workload for some of the guys that do the most running. They started today with a really hodge-podge XI (who the hell is Fontas!?) and although they made it 2-0 v. quickly it hasn't been vintage Barca at all and they conceded both goals as quickly as the ones they scored in the first half.

Madrid will love this result but it's a long season and even though we have the Manchester teams walking it today, it's hard not to forget how Chelsea started last year and how they finish, and we're famous for usually starting very strongly before fading away. D:

Messi goes down very easily in the box when he's not banged a goal in already. Busquets with a studs up tackle and nothing given. Barcelona: more than a club (so you can't send our players off).

Just wait for them go back to their winning line up.

Pedro - Villa - Messi
Xavi - Iniesta - Biscuits
Abidal - Puyol - Pique - Alves

But then they have a problem with keeping players on the bench that would get first team action in any other team on the planet.

Thats the team that won them last season and the CL.

I'm sure they do a La Liga round up type show, used to enjoy it actually with Bolton presenting (quite liked him, good that he was a presenter with an opinion)

Ah that was it, Revista De La Liga :)

Used to enjoy it with Bolton presenting.

The Spanish round up by Sid Lowe (Normally focused on RM / Barca) on the Guardian Podcast is really good, Sid Lowe is a top, top, top football journo and he writes very well for the Guardian too :) Well worth a read.
