Spanish Grand Prix 2010, Circuit de Catalunya - Race 5/19

Just a question regarding the whole engine reliability thing...

Ferrari have been using this engine design for what, at least the last full season right? Maybe two seasons? (I can't quite remember) As have Toro Rosso, who to my knowledge haven't had any engine failures this season?

Why now are they unreliable and they're able to work on them?

something a LOT of people are wondering...

Maybe they modified the engine during the Winter, to fit into the new car. And now they have just found a minor defect in the "modified" engine and want to fix it.

Formula One touches down in Europe for the first time this season for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The Red Bull Racing team with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber want to reap the benefits for their hard work during the three-week break. I should probably add to my question over the Ferrari engines that I'm not trying to call Ferrari out on anything, or suggest anything underhanded. I'm just genuinely curious as my understanding was that the engine was effectively the same unit as before.

Personally I think it's bull**** that Ferrari are allowed to work on their engine. Renault shouldn't have been allowed either.

Part of F1 has always been reliability. They didn't bring a good enough engine and they should suffer for it. Either there is an engine freeze or there isn't, all of this 'ah ok, have a fiddle with it then' is blatantly unfair to both McLaren and Red Bull.

Seeing as Red Bull are powered by Renault they have benefited from the work allowed on the engine from Reggie.

As for the Ferrari situation apparently it is an intrinsic problem with the engine which they got around by topping up the pneumatic system at pit stops. With the lack of refuelling the cars aren't stopped long enough to allow this. Rather than increase the pitstop time they've allowed the engines to go bang.

Fact remains that Renault were allowed to. And we can't on the one hand complain about inconsistency from the FIA and race stewards and then on the other hand moan when they are consistent.

FWIW, I do think that the engine freeze should have been religiously stuck to once it was brought in. I don't think it should ever have been brought in in the first place of course, but that's a whole different argument!
