Spanish Grand Prix 2014, Catalunya - Race 5/19

On Rosberg last year, Monaco probably more than any other race you really have to be comfortable in the car. SO I think earlier in the season and having exceptionally little margin for error that gave Rosberg a pretty big advantage there last year, this year I think that advantage is gone. Not that Rosberg can't get pole/win. Just being more comfortable with the car will help at Monaco more than any other race.

This time last year Rosberg got pole in Bahrain and Spain leading in to pole at Monaco and he beat Hamilton in the Spanish race also. Wasn't anywhere near as one sided at this point last year.

I hate that people have to apologise for swearing on live TV. If you're offended by a swear word then you're a ****.

Great race. Happy Lewis held on and slick Ric got a podium finish, he seems so level headed and happy with that despite being such a good driver. Such a good drive by vettel though, briliant

And I'm drunk

BUT WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?! :p

Oh for sure, I know your comment is said in jest/sarcasm but there is a point to it that children shouldn't be subjected to naughty words. However, this is the real world and you and I knew what naughty words were from an early age. The difference is, we were probably disciplined for ever using them and were educated that they were naughty. It all comes down to good parenting right? :p

**** ***.

I'm sorry.

I agree that it's daft.

As a society, for some reason, we are shocked and appalled by the idea of children hearing some particular words, or seeing anything vaguely sexual. But, we don't seem to have a problem with them being exposed to a fair degree of violence and brutality. It's always seemed strange to me even when I was myself a child. Maybe Niki Lauda would call it bull****.

Anyway, that's a debate for a different day!

I fell asleep during the middle. Nice battle at the end though, good to see teammates allowed to race.
I've always been a Vettel critic, but fair play to him today for overtaking through the field :).

With Vettel's failures during practice and qualifying, it seems though that like the last few years with Webber, Red Bull are only capable of screwing one car together correctly over a weekend. They need a bit of an emphasis on quality control to consistently assemble both cars over a weekend!

boring race, switched off after lap 10, came back when there was 6 laps left. However the fault of that is because all the other cars can't keep up with the Mercedes.

Just watched it on Sky+, So glad I'm watching on Sky, after watching that podium interview. EJ is a prat. Very close at the end there, well between the Mercs anyway

I think Monaco will be the key race. Firstly because it's the best chance for the other teams (particularly red bull) to challenge the Mercedes. In terms of the Hamilton Rosberg battle it will be key... Canada follows Monaco and Hamilton has to be massive faveourite there - he always does well at canada, plus it will be one of the most fuel-intensive races of the season (along with Monza), and we've seen that Hamilton's driving style conserves fuel better. If Hamilton wins Monaco and Canada he's be at least 17 points ahead of Rosberg, which would be a tough gap to close. Not to mention the psychological blow of coming behind in six consecutive races.

Regarding fuel, I wouldn't be surprised if a few teams start Monaco with less than 100kg of fuel.

How many times does Kimi end up on the wrong strategy, did he take his pitwall/engineer guy from Lotus over to Ferrari? Last year several times on the two stop vs Grosjean on the three stop he got caught at the end and passed so easily by Grosjean and in one race I think he lost like 4-5 places in the final 10 laps or something.

This year I think it's already happened then happened again today. Though Kimi's post race interview where sky bird asked him about if he could could have pitted first due to track position and he basically just walked off was brilliant, Damon/Jonny/Simon loved him walking off too.

But realistically he was keeping ALonso behind pretty comfortably and had he pitted three times and got to pit first each time against Alonso he would likely have finished ahead of him.

Did Hamilton have his engined turned down lower than Rosberg throughout the race, or was he under fuelled because he was way ahead of Rosberg(from what we're told at least) than at previous races.

I think like at previous races the faster tire at the end strategy seems preferable, because tracks are in better condition later in races and they can turn engines up beyond the saving enough fuel point. Though that never happened today. I was half expecting a radio message of "errm, sorry Lewis we forgot to tell you to turn the engine back up" in the final 10 laps then see him just cruise away from Rosberg.

Well I enjoyed the race muchly. Proper squeeky bum at the end watching Rosberg close in on Hamilton at a fair lick.

And the atmosphere at a track always gets me. Even though I don't like Alonso I couldn't help but want him to pass Kimi with all the cheering Spanish fans around.

And Catalunya is a great track for spectating.

Four world titles, most of which were hard fought till the end of the year.

Careful now...

I'm trying to think when a car has had as big an advantage as this. 98 maybe but that was only for a race until they banned the Mclaren pedal. Other than that 92?

So here we are again arguing over the element of the car that is 0.5% of the lap time max? Vettel is just the same as JV, did a good job in the best car, then the rules changed and his car was no longer the best or get the best from those regulations. As I said last year if JV had 92-97 he would have won 4 world titles too. Or if he'd kept 0.5 of a second + every year.

Now we have them proclaiming Lewis as driving his best ever and sorted himself out etc etc. No he isn't, he just has a car the likes of which he has never had before. Nothing has changed, just the same as we said with Vettel, it's easy when you have a car so much faster and a team mate not quite on the same level.

At least it looks like being a decent season everywhere else in the field because unless Hamilton has a few retirements the titles will be dull.
