Spanish resorts overrun with tourists

Just stay away from Spain and holiday else where, let them struggle, hotels empty, resturants and bars closing there tax's will soon go up.

Just back from Corfu, there's a tourism tax there of 10 euros a night per room, payable on checking into the hotel. I believe it goes (is supposed to go) to the Government and gets put into a pot for measures to mitigate climate change.

Same as Morocco, it's not a fixed charge but seems like a percentage.

The problem with tourism isn't tourists, it's AirBnB.

By making it vastly more profitable for anyone owning property in tourist destinations to just short-term let, they have destroyed the long-term rental and sale market that provides homes for the people that actually live there.

When tourists stayed in hotels and B&Bs, and the people that worked in the hotels and B&Bs lived in the apartments and houses......the system worked. But when all the apartments, houses, hotels and B&Bs are all full of tourists, and the workers have nowhere to live.....quelle surprise eventually people have enough.

Add to that staying in a hotel provides employment to hotel workers, and if you don't have kitchen facilities in your room (as an Airbnb typically does) you're more likely to be eating out and supporting the local restaurant industry.

Restricting the availability of Airbnbs or heavily taxing them seems like a no brainer

I was in Tenerife at the beginning of Oct this year, stopped in a lay-by to take a few pics and there was a map showing the view of Mount Teide and everything in between, well scrawled on the perspex it said, "your holiday, our misery" there were protests scheduled for the 20th of the month if I remember but we were only there for 2 weeks so missed it but most of the locals I spoke with were happy with tourists

Erm, Corfu isn't in Spain.

I go to Spain 2 or 3 times a year, never seen any bother.
I was in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Benidorm last year - they love us.

It's not just Spain. Everywhere is is sick of the housing shortages for local people including the UK.

It is for France, I didn't say it wasn't for anywhere else! I won't go to Italy for this reason.
