Spate of destroying speed cameras in villages

They're profit generation. Rarely do they have anything to do with protecting people or reducing accidents. If that were the case they'd be outside every school.

Rare that a school would need a speed camera. Almost 100% of their activity is exactly at rush hour and they are in heavily built up areas.

They need some monitoring Mums in giant SUVs blocking driveways, junctions, corners and sometimes the entire road. Especially when they live about 200 meters from the school.

I don't really have a problem with fixed speed cameras - if you speed, you should drive with an app like Waze active at all times which lets you know where they are, and if you don't speed, then they don't affect you. They seem to catch the 40MPH everywhere type of drivers, which is definitely a good thing tbh.

Instead of vandalizing the fixed cameras, those people should devote their energy to blocking or warning people of police speed traps or camera vans - those can catch out even the most observant speeders.

You can actually get done for warning people of police speed traps. Doesn't stop people though.

If they are set at 20 and it was a non school area cut em down I say.

I really hate the blanket 20 we have here.

Its not just the 20 but I've cut down going into town due to the multiple anti car policies here

It's stupid how anti-car some places are, yet public transport remains **** and doesn't get any more investment. The companies running it also taking the **** with cutting routes so anyone who does get rid of their car can't go anywhere.

The irony is that these anti car policies are largely because your average road user is a selfish cretin.

To note, I said road users, car drivers are the easy target because they are the largest population of said selfish cretins.

Speed cameras should have a set of in road stingers just past the camera so the selfish scrotes who speed end up with a bill for 4 tyres
Also a .50cal, those caught doing double the speed just deal with the situation immediately ;)

The main problem with speeding (I am talking excessive here, not 31 in a 30), is that the vast majority see it as acceptable. Until you break that, your never going to win.
Speeding probably the most broken daily law I would expect.

Yeah public transport is shocking here.

Looking forward to moving away.

I live in one of those worst of both worlds places. Too far from town to make it a hassle to get in now. But not far enough to be in a village.

Road layout changes,
20mph default limit
Increased parking charges..

No point living near town if you don't go in!

Indeed. It's fine for them to ignore the speed limit and bomb along at 40-50 in a 30, but if you ignore the give way line and pull out in front of them then that's apparently "not OK"?

I know people say that if vandalised they will just be replaced, achieve nothing & just cost the taxpayer, but that's not the case IME.

mp's had a debate yesterday to try and avoid wales situation in London https://www.theyworkforyou.com/whall/?id=2023-12-05a.1.0

I have seen that for myself, by the way. He goes on:

“I have spoken to a number of bus drivers who drive the roads of Waltham Forest who all mention the problems these obstructions cause including drivers being off work sick with back and neck pain and additional stress due to having to negotiate these structures.”

Lee Gilbert said:

“We suffer sleep deprivation and I suffer from anxiety and fear that the movements may cause the house to collapse whilst in bed. There are 20 mph signs although they are not adhered to. We have been trying to seek a solution to this major problem since the Speed Hump was installed in July 2022 with no results.”

Tracey Gauld said:

“I was injured when my car was hit by a drunk driver which left me requiring surgery on my collar bone. Still to this day, going over humps is uncomfortable due to the seat belt”.

...

The suspicion across Wales is that this rule was not passed because it represents a good return on investment, or because Labour leaders believe it would improve the lives of Welsh residents. No, I suspect that at the heart of this move is a general disdain for cars, exuded by those who do not have to rely on them for their daily lives. For my rural community, cars are essential. They dramatically expand our choice of where we can live and work. They expand our social spheres, bring us closer to people we love, and save us valuable time for the things that really matter to us. They are indispensable to the economic and social life of Aberconwy communities. At a fundamental level, they also embody an ideal of Conservative politics: empowering the individual.

As has been pointed out throughout this debate, there are appropriate roads on which to restrict car speeds to 20 mph, for reasons of health and safety and the environment. The sweeping restrictions we see creeping into parts of the UK, however, appear to be the vision of a managerial minority without heed to the expanse of the majority. It is for this reason that I, too, must urge a roll-back of these restrictions. I started by commending my right hon. Friend the Member for Chingford and Woodford Green for his awareness of what people were thinking. This Saturday, two mums from my constituency, Tina and Debbie—the two people, if I might say, least likely to arrange a protest—will be holding a rally of “Conwy against the 20 mph limit”, in Llandudno. I will be there to support them.

Because most of these 20 limits are in residential zones, I have to ask...
So what do we do with the people who (and this will of course happen) hit a child crossing the road, whilst doing 30 in a newly-made 20 zone?
Esp if there is a chance that the collision might not have happened at 20?
Do we effectively concede that the real limit is 30 and let the driver off, or throw the book at them, because the number on the sign says 20?
If you hit a kid in a residential zone, you should get the book thrown at you regardless of the speed limit on the sign.

When I'm driving in residential streets with parked cars both sides and very limited visibility I'm often doing significantly less than 20, and constantly scanning the peripheries, slowing even more if there's a tell-tale sign such as an open house or car door that might indicate someone might step out.

Rather than a book, maybe a train

Right Infront of the camera would have been a great spot for a large hanging basket :D

Instead of stingers, perhaps those big steel posts that drop into the ground which are used to open and close routes for buses. Link them to speed detectors and they rise above a certain speed, then bam, their car is pretty much written off

Huh huh huh.

20mph zones are ridiculous. We have 30km zones here and they are terrible. Its a money scam and those who say it will go when people get better are living in a dream world. Then again judging by some bootlickers they would be happy with the government monitoring every element of their lives..
