As you can see from the part number the ram is CL4-4-4 DDR 800, however the ram is running at 5-5-5-18 @ 400mhz, just like the SPD shows and is also displayed as 5-5-5-18 in the memory tab. Basically, can i lower the timing?

hi there,
iam running 4 sticks of this ram at 800mhz (4 x 1gig) with 4 4 4 12 timings, just upped the voltage to 2 volts.
think the spd is a safe setting to enable compatability.
regards..

Check the manufacturer's specs on timings vs voltages.

The Corsair stuff I use is also 4-4-4-12 rated, but only at 2.1v. The DIMMs have no way of telling the mobo that this voltage is required, however, so it will default to running them at the standard 1.8v, at which voltage they will only do 5-5-5-18, so this is what the SPD reports to the motherboard. Once you've raised the voltage to 2.1v, you can also lower the timings to 4-4-4-12.

I suspect your Geil stuff is similar.

I had that memory (wish i still did) I found it would run at either 400mhz 4-4-4-12 or 480mhz 5-5-5-18 both with 2.1v

i set the timing and it seems to be running fine @ 2 volts, however i remember the voltage was written on the ram so i will check what it says there!

thanks for the help

yeah it's for compatibility reasons. Just put it at like 2.1v and timings manually in the bios! :)
