I broke off one of the speaker wires for my dads speakers.

I would like to replace them and clean them out.. because as you will see they are right old and bloody well dirty. I would like to know what the wires are called and what kind of wire I should buy... the distance is only like 0.5m/1m so nothing too long and I would like to know how to install the wires as well since I haven't really had a long enough look at it.

Just scroll through using next/ 1,3,2, etc..

Unless your some sort of audiophile you are never going to notice an improvement in sound. Judging by the hifi and the cable there already, I bet your dad won't hear a difference.
QED 79 strand speaker cable used to be ( and probably still is) the budget 'HiFi' choice for a upgrade from bell wire cable. Around a £1 a meter or thereabouts.

Much cheaper on ebay.

OK sure. Do you know any videos of it being installed? To avoid confusion.

So does that mean the hifi and cable are really good already? It must be pretty old because there certainly aren't any reviews! :D haha

Whatever you can get cheap will be fine. Those speakers only have spring clips, so just strip a bit of insulation off, insert and your done.

79-strand is a bit thick for those spring terminals. Look for QED Micro or another thinner cable.
No need to spend a fortune, even Maplin stuff is good enough.
As for connection- simple. Red to red, black to black...

No I mean like banana plugs, what are they and should I use them? Do I just lift the spring then put all the copper stuff underneath and let go of the spring?

Thanks will order some QED micro

Like I said, you only have spring clips not 4mm sockets ( though I have seen some people force banana plugs into them), so just strip the insulation press the button to open the aperture and push the cable in.

yes lift, insert and let it drop, it will then hold the wire.

As long as your cables are capable of letting the power through the cables with out adding noticeable resistance then you will be fine. Looking at that system I imagine just about anything with copper in it should be fine.

IMHO the whole speaker cable thing is mostly a big sales pitch to help ppl spend money they don't need to. i really really doubt you will hear anything different between those cables you have (that look very basic) and something that costs £1m.. Also the cables with more copper won't fit in the connectors you have.

You don't need banana plugs. You don't need to spend any money.

I have military grade cable running to my two fronts (got it as a cut off from work) I cant hear a damn difference between any of my speakers. Any cable will be fine.

Wouldn't these be better? https://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables/qed/micro/qed-micro

Also there are barely any QED 79s on sale on ebay for a good price.

My dad is slightly an audiophile.. I don't really know where the definition of the audiophile stands but he can hear minute differences and always moans about stuff when I rip using 320 instead of FLAC. or hes just a troll
Decent gauge 2 core copper mains cable is excellent as speaker cable. Banana plugs are just a neat method of termination which helps keep things tidy. If you wanted to go exotic you could get them terminated with neutrik speakon connectors. (except you'd need to mod both the amp and speakers to fit terminals to support it)

You should muck him about by encoding them as 320kbps mp3 then convert them to flac afterwards and see if he ever notices a difference.

He's trolling you because there's no way kit old enough to be using the previous Pioneer logo are in any sort of condition to be hearing those differences.

Funny you should mention speakON, got a couple of old speakers from work to use as surrounds until I can shell out for some KEF's and they only took speakON, have used them at work but they really are great connectors. Ive used plugs at one end and then the speaker requires the speakON. such a tidy connection, would love to see them used more in home gear.

The differences people hear are typically unquantifiable, and they often use buzzwords that have little to no meaning.

Rename some of your MP3s to .flac and see if he moans or claims to be able hear a difference.

Got a quad 240 poweramp that uses them and have to agree. (The little harbeth monitors I use in work have them too) The consumer market gets all the crap interconnects. Pro kit is so well made and easy to work with, plus it all locks in place. (Xlr, bnc, triax, speakon, powercon and the like are all fantastic)
