Spec a CAD build £800

Computer keeps crashing :(

It was ok when I first had it, now over the past two weeks its always crashing when on google maps using the zoom function,
Recently CAD also while zooming in and using Pan, and now in windows picture editor while setting highlights.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks in advance

Have you got the latest graphics driver installed? This is worth a check..

You need another data cable, the SSD/HDD and DVD drive all need a SATA cable to the motherboard and of course a power cable from the power supply.

It's bee sorted now, OC staff send me a few over.

Yep checked.
I thought it was the mouse ( as the wheel may have interrupted something) swapped that out and its still freezing.

microsoft suggests a full reinstall of Windows, but will I loose anything in the process?

edit - removed, this shouldn't have been here haha

No problems :)

when you say crashing, do you mean it freezes and becomes unresponsive, or that it blue screens and restarts?

if it's bluescreening, you (or someone :p ) should be able to get some info from the minidump file that will have been created.

most BSODs (that I've seen at least), are caused by a driver in some way, and these files should tell us which driver.

they live in: C:\Windows\Minidump

there are a few programs about which can make viewing them easier as well, I used one before called BlueScreenView, which presents it exactly as the blue screen would have looked

Hi,

Freezing, unresponsive to keyboard and mouse, needs to be reset via on/off button.

Just checked for a minidump file, there isn't one.

ok, no bluescreen makes it more likely a hardware problem (in my mind at least).
the minidumps would only be generated in the event of a bluescreen.

the voltages in your HWmonitor shot look a little suspect to me, in that the 3.3v, 5v and 12v are all way out of spec, and that they show zero movement, however if they were THAT far out of spec, it probably wouldn't boot. hopefully someone more familiar with Gigabyte's naming will be able to let you know if this is normal!

until then, I would probably start by running the usual battery of stability tests:

memtest86: http://www.memtest86.com/
you'll need to burn this to a CD or USB, and boot from it, it will hammer your ram and report any errors, if memory is the issue (which I don't suspect at this point), then it will more than likely error in the first minute, however it can seem healthy for hours before it gets to the area of memory that is broken in some cases. errors in this can also indicate CPU/power/motherboard issues, but should at least give us a clue

Prime95: used to test CPU + RAM stability http://www.mersenne.org/download/
run that, select 'just stress testing', and select a setting:
- Small FFTs: very CPU heavy
- Large FFTs: RAM heavy
- Blend: both I think! (if i've got any of this wrong, someone, please, call me out on it!!)

did the freezing start before/after the addition of the SATA cable for DVD?
if around the same time, could be something to do with that, although I'm 99% sure that would BSOD as opposed to hang/freeze.

I'm afraid I can't really suggest much more right now, as I'd usually have started swapping out parts by now, and I'm guessing that's not really an option in your situation :(

pre-post edit: did you update SSD firmware? it's just occured to me that if the drive crashed out, it wouldn't be able to write, and therefore I'd expect it to cause a lock up

Hi,

The freezing started around a week after I plugged in the SATA cable for the DVD. First with google maps zoom function (around 2-3 weeks ago) autocad was fine until the other day, and now its simple photo corrections on windows photos.

Ill download and try out what you have linked. Thanks.

Screenshot of around 30 second interval:

ok, that's all looking pretty healthy!
voltages and temps are all within normal range, and the motherboard voltage bit that had me worried before is probably just the way your board reports it, and my ignorance therein!

I've just arrived at my friends house, who just happens to be a CAD designer, and he tells me him and his colleague have been having similar issues with 8.1/autocad, a quick google led me to this:
http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2013-2014-2015/autocad-2014-and-windows-8-1/td-p/4632085

hopefully that will be of some use, however I see that you are running AutoCAD 2015 which is officially supported on 8.1.....

a little more googling and it looks like there are tonnes of people having issues with CAD on 8.1, regardless of version.

I know it's not ideal, but the only real way to rule out autocad as the culprit would be to re-install windows, and use it for a few weeks before installing AutoCAD.

are you still on onboard (intel) graphics? I wouldn't be all that surprised if autodesk hadn't put a vast effort into testing these, at least compared to nV/AMD

Thats gave me a little peace on mind :)

Yes, its the 2015. Was working fine, all functioning singing and dancing so i'm not sure it's the culprit, but a victim of something else.
Yes, its on board graphics. (will be dedicated in a few weeks)

I'll try and find the SSD firmware and see if i can update it.

thanks.

Edit: Checked the crucial website and its not got my MX100 listed (possibly no firmware updates)

really confused how this memtest86

Use the CD burning software available on your system to create a CD-ROM using the the ISO
image. Be sure that you create a CD image from the ISO file rather than placing a copy of
the ISO file onto a data CD. Look for “Burn Image from File” or similar option under the
File menu of your CD burning software. In version of Windows starting with Vista you should
be able to right click the ISO file and select the "Burn disc image" option.

Some unzip software is capable of extracting the contents of ISO files. If you see a folder
named ISOLINUX then you have extracted the ISO file. This is not what you want to do.

Im not sure how to extract the files without ISOLINUX????? any assistance please.

really confused how this memtest86.

It's just a program for testing the RAM is OK. It's pretty unlikely the memory suddenly developed a problem and it looks like AutoCAD might be the culprit, but if you really want to try it you need to burn the .iso file to a CD/DVD using appropriate software. Alternatively, you can get this and a ton of other useful programs with the UBCD, which I believe can be run from a USB stick:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html#usb

So I run memtest 86 the other day and no errors popped up.

Today however, I just turned on my PC and an error code:0x0000021 message was the first thing to greet me after entering into my account.

I've done a google search and found a place saying something about a poorly maintained PC? and to download a registry cleaner....well i know thats BS so wont be doing that.

Thing im going for a restore.

Done a restore and went straight onto google maps, Its not freezing so I'm a happy guy for now.

I'll update windows first and test.

I've got a few questions, Do I need to install all the motherboard drivers again along with all the Intel things? or are they there, just not with an app?

This is my list of removed applications that was on the desktop in a folder.
