hi guys this will be my 1st pc and first build so just want to check this RAM is ok, i will be overclocking probably a few months down the line once i got my head around all of it 1st, i will be mostly picture editing with light video editing, no gaming at all.

the ram on the below list was suggested by a few oc guys
YOUR BASKET

and my mate just came round who thinks he knows a bit about pc's he said i should go for lower then 2666 on the ram as i will never use it and suggested kingston as a great make, he suggested this ram
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-113-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=2426

i just dont know what to think, i was happy with the full oc list but every time my mate comes round he spouts about my list and what he would change then im left puzzled :(

he done the same with the PSU but i will make another thread about that in the PSU topic lol :(

The ram you originally chosen in your spec will be perfect for Haswell, as these like high speed ram :)

So stick with the TeamGroup.

:D

im not looking at any GPU as of yet, my bank is going to be crying for a good few months after this buy :( the mrs only thinks im paying £400 for the build lol, i know some picture and video editing do run better with a GPU but for now i think ill see how i get on with the onboard

thanks for the psu suggestions also, i just made this topic in the hardware section as i cant find the psu section
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18540827

so them 2 psu's would they do the job nicely? my friend also suggested corsair and modular psu to match the case for fitting purposes, but im not listening to him any more :( what would you think would be the best psu for under £100 for my build and to future proof me.... it really is the last choice now i have to confirm :) do u think i should go modular?

Well, he's right in that the RAM won't make any real difference. Haswell is able to use higher speed RAM, but it doesn't result in big performance improvements. It's also a big overclock on the memory controller, and 2666MHz can harm overclocking potential on the CPU.

e.g. compare these benchmarks with RAM at 1600MHz and 3100MHz:

i wont be over clocking for ages probably and if the pc runs nice without overclocking i probably wont need to right..... surely if i got this 2666mhz ram it can run lower and more efficient right? what ram would you suggest to compliment my build, im kind of wishing i didnt ask or my mate didnt come round as i was excited about having a finished list now its getting more and more unfinished :(

The RAM is the same price as 1600mhz, you can run at the speed which you feel best suited to your setup.

So you can run it lower speed if needed.

You can always run RAM rated at a high speed at a lower speed. The best memory to go for is 2133MHz at C9 latency. It doesn't overwork the CPU, and the increase in speed together with low latency gives consistently good results in the few applications where it makes any difference.

Here you can see this in action, as the 2133MHz memory outperforms the 3100MHz memory - but we're talking differences that only apply to benchmarks (about 1-2fps)

so it makes sense if the 2666mhz is the same price as the 1600, so i can run the 2666mhz at a lower speed, and still have the option to run higher once i get more experienced in the future, thanks a lot buddy, and thats good the high profile will not be of any concern with the cpu cooler as i can just move the fan from front to back, that would be easy right? unscrew a few screws and move to the opposite end of the cooler right? thats what ive got in my brain, just want to make sure lol

edit, thanks tepic just seen your post, so i can just run the 2666mhz ram say at 2133mhz :) sorry for all the posts just trying to get my head around so many things and ive not even ordered anything yet

The C10 2400MHz memory would be good - that'd very possibly still run at C9 2400MHz, or C9 2133MHz.

And I think Patriot memory looks really good ;)

I thought you had the 2133mhz version of that ram, some other cheaper options which are low profile:

YOUR BASKET
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD38G2133HC11ADC01) £65.99
1 x Patriot Venom Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (PV38G240C0KRD) £65.99
Total : £140.68 (includes shipping : £7.25).

they both look very nice, i could close my eyes and choose one tho as i really dont know what would be best, i suppose any thing is going to be miles ahead for me as my 1st pc as im use to 1gb ram notepads that freeze if i try to watch a youtube video, i dont mind upping the budget to £100 for ram and £100 for psu, but if i picked one it would just be on looks :( sorry im a pain in the butt arnt i :(

C10 2400MHz > C11 2133MHz :)

A rough guide to good RAM buying:

C9 1600MHz
C9 1866MHz
C10/C11 2133MHz
C10/C11 2400MHz

Latencies generally affect real apps and games more than memory speed, so long as the speed's at 1600MHz or more. For instance, going from C9 1600MHz to C12 2133MHz would likely cause a drop in performance. Again though, we're talking minor differences you could only measure in benchmarks.

(The exception - AMD APUs. The GPU part of the APU performs much better with high speed RAM, as it's powerful enough to make full use of it)

Personally I would stick with the Patriot.

For that price you can get 16gb ram, even though the timings would be slacker!
