Hi there, been 3 years since my last build and its time for an overhaul. I game 90% of the time so im not really interested in encoding or video playback, had a quick look and came up with this:

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 NCQ 400GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (£55.21) x 2(£110.42)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (£150.39) (£150.39)

Seasonic M12 Modular 700W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply (£135.11) (£135.11)

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 Soundcard - OEM (£49.34) (£49.34)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)(£17.61) (£17.61)

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS SuperClocked 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (320-P2-E815-AR)(£211.49) (£211.49)

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator DHX PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)(£123.36) (£123.36)

Abit AW9D-MAX Intel 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard(£129.24) (£129.24)

Case, opticals, fans etc. I have so its just the listed parts I need. Any comments appreciated as unfortunatly i havn't kept up with current affairs too well. My budget is about 900 - 950 after tax, so please chop and change if needed. Will the soundcard be worth the money for gaming (usually headset rather than 5.1 / 7.1)?

Also im in need of a new monitor, i want a 22" (or there abouts) widescreen tft, and have never owned a tft before (love my old 19" Imagequest Q995), budget on this is 250 - 300 quid.

I was looking at:

Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor

although again no idea if this is a worthwile investment for the next 3 years or so

(p.s. hoping this si in the right forum, seen specs in CAse Central but i dont need a chasis so doesnt seem right :) )

Thanks for the comments

You have selected a very old and expensive board, may i suggest a P35 DS3R? You can then afford a Noctua/Tuniq cooler for extra OC capability.

Would say also that the PSU is overkill for that PC also, would suggest a Corsair 520W (always :D ).

I was thinking that, but hell what do i know. I think soundcards are best for music editting really, integrated sound nowadays is certainly adequate enough for gaming.

i think this will suit you more than what you had specced

you could change the psu to a 520w corsair and it would be fine but i love my 620w
the mobo is penryn compatible
ram will do 1150mhz (more than the dominator will do)
the hdd is one of the fastest yet remains the most silent on the market atm
and 8800gtx for the win if the money is there

if you do want the xfi card then get the oem one and your still in budget

Nice spec by paul there.

However.. I am going to challenge him.. OOohh Yes!

Included case/opticals/gtx/sound card & a ddr3 compatible mobo. Gaming performance will be very similar.

nice one jaffa but 50 quid more for less performance isnt a way forward is it m8.. and your speccing things he doesnt want

ull see tomorrow he will want what u specced and ill be the half asleep one

Nope, you are right. Full Stop in a very strange place. Now that I have finished correcting OP's gramma. Go for pauls spec

haha, yeah sorry my post was lame. I had about 15 hours sleep in 5 days before that and posted that near midnight. Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm sorry to say that I have never overclocked a system before to any major degree (too much risk with the money available to me at the time) but now I am going to delve into it a bit more with this. I'm liking Paul_64s' spec there, and i'm assuming in theory at least there should be plenty of room for a performance boost?
Questions though:
The RAM seems a slower standard clock than the set I selected, will this make much of a difference, or are we assuming i bleed every last MHz from the kit?
I'm still wondering if anybody has any information on the screen i was looking at?
Is is worth getting Vista or better off sticking with XP Pro?

Thanks again

P.s. Unless i'm mistaken the "full stop" there identifies a shortened word, i.e. Etc. - Etcetera :P

Maybe a stupid question but I blame that on me just waking up..

You never specified the case that you already have, will it fit a GTX card? If this is a stupid question I do apologize! [Just seen other posts where its been said the case wont fit a GTS/GTX cards, would be awful if you got all the stuff and then it wont fit!]

In regards to a monitor I would suggest the HP W2207, don't have one myself [yet!] but what I seen I like! :D Link below shows some pictures of it in action, just scroll down a couple of posts.. ohh and the price tag is £229.

Hope I been to some help!

Cheers
Tom

the ram i picked is the same chips as the 8500 ballistix so will do 1100mhz no problem at all

stay away from vista for the next few months once sp1 comes out it will be all good.. you could always dual boot but if you do that go for vista 64 home premium

thats a nice spec Jaffa, if you want to skimp on a few squids skip the sound card for a rainy day, onbard works fine unless you are going for a 5.1, 7.1 etc.
