I am going to purchase the Dell 2707 monitor and want to build a new pc to go with it.

My problem is I don't know whether to build a gaming box or get a console to connect to my monitor to satisfy my gaming requirements.

Could you please spec me a £1,000 box for gaming and also say a £500-600 box suitable for everything except gaming i.e. browsing, music, office, burning and watching films and video etc.

My total budget is £1,500 including the monitor.

How about a £600 system that is capable of playing games + a console?

Yeah, they're very good PSUs, although the 620w is on offer this week @ £81 so it might be worth it just for peace of mind.

The corsairs are pretty good PSU'. I'd have gone for the Corsair 520W to be safe, but the 450W will be good enough.

Quick spec here, you wont need the £1500 i doubt.

I would suggest upgrading the sound card to an Xtreme Music or Gamer as the Xtreme Audio is generally regarded as little more than a rebadged Audigy :)

Why do you want a gaming pc and a normal pc? because unless are being used at once, why not just build a gaming pc, as a gaming pc can handle other stuff as well =s

how has all that come in at £1300!?

I've drawn up a similar spec (more HDD and 2x20" monitors, but a 8800GT and cheaper PSU) for the same price! I think i'm going to look again - 27" monitor would be so sweet

Ben M, I don't want two pc's. I cannot make up my mind on whether to have a gaming pc or have a cheaper pc (not suitable for gaming, but ok for most other stuff) plus a console connected to my monitor. Depends I suppose whether I think that games available on consoles are better than that available for pc!!!!!

Still cannot seem to make my mind up.

I personally think your decision on what to spend your money on should be made by the games you are likely to play and what type of controls you prefer, rather than budget. If you want Halo 3, then there is only one choice. If you want Call of Duty 4, would you prefer a control pad or a mouse and keyboard?

I've used both consoles and PCs to play online games, and would ALWAYS opt for the PC using a mouse and keyboard - it's far more flexible and rewarding imo.

How about this for a spec:

Asus P5K3 Deluxe WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £109.99
Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM (WD1500ADFD) £96.99

Namistai, no I don't require an OS. Also the board you listed is DDR3 and you have listed DDR2 memory. Otherwise looks good. I already have an Antec P182 case so will just need a PSU. Wouldn't HD onboard sound be good enough these days?

In answer to your other questions, I prefer Keyboard and mouse for games such as Call of Duty, although I am a big Halo fan also. Additionally I love driving games on the consoles using the gamepads i.e. PGR3 on Xbox360 and GT5 in the future on PS3.

I suppose I want the best of both worlds really and will have to build a reasonably powerful gaming PC and get a console as well.

Oops, I added the wrong mobo! This was what I was meant to add:

Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-241-AS

As for a PSU, I would probably try a Corsair 620w, although it's worth checking the length of the cables for the Antec P182 case: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-CS

I would go for an separate sound card instead of using onboard as it means that it won't be using CPU resources for sound, although I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make on a PC of this specification.

It would defintely be possible to get both a console and a decent PC within your budget with some simple compromises on the PC spec. I've built a couple of PCs for friends recently based on an E6750 CPU and an 8800GT for under £600. They fly along nicely for Call of Duty 4 and would leave you plenty for a console as well :D
