Looking to see what I'd have to spend to get a decent PC build to replace my macbook pro 2011. I have started to get in to editing and the macbook is woefully slow for anything longer than a 5 minute clip. I am happy to build myself but if it's as cheap to buy a ready built PC I'd be fine with that. Ball park figure is £500 to £900? I guess there will be a threshold where cost:performance starts to get pointless but I don't know where that is.

What I'd like:

Subtle case like the antec 300, quiet if possible but don't want to spend too much on this
SSD for the OS, probably no lower than 128gb as I will have lots of other software which will take up space (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Photoshop, Illustrator etc)
HDD for storage, 1-2tb

What I don't need:

Graphics power (unless it's going to speed up the editing). I don't do gaming.
OS (I have Win7pro retail)
Monitor
Mouse
Keyboard
Speakers
DVD drive

Thanks guys/gals

Wohooo! For £900 you will be amazed how it compares to your macbook. I'll just put a spec together as a start....

.... what video editing program are you using? or going to be using?

1. It won't be as cheap to buy pre built. From what i've seen/read, building is always cheaper for the same spec/ better spec for the same price.

2. The graphics card needed depends if the software will use it. If you tell us which program you use we can check if the GPU will be used to help the rendering/converting etc.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £239.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £83.99
1 x Gigabyte H77-D3H Intel H77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £80.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £79.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD316GB1333C9DC) **OcUK Exclusive** £59.99
1 x Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £59.99
1 x XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £49.99
Total : £669.92 (includes shipping : £12.50).

- Leaves room in the budget for a graphics card.
- PSU is probably overkill
- CPU might be more than necessary

what do the experts think of that spec^^ ?

I would up the HDD to 3TB and change the RAM for some 1666 or 1800 Mhz as theres little price difference there. Would also add an aftermarket cooler so that you can OC the CPU.
If your not gaming there is no need for a GPU as the HD4000 should be solid enough to cope.

I'll most likely be using Adobe Premiere Pro. I donated my old PC to the Mrs and that has a 1GB GTX 460 inside, I could always nick that back and she can use onboard gfx, she only really uses it for the internet now she has an iPad.

How does this look?

+1 for master Bacon, a i7 for more cpu power, the right m/b a good hdd, i might have gone for 3TB as there cheap atm, the more ram the better so 16gb is what i use as well as the i7 so double thumbs up

good cpu cooler but not used the psu before so can't comment on that tbh

so here's a few others to look at

1 x XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £49.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020059-UK) £49.99
1 x XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £39.95

I really like your choice and love the CM Case. The only thing bugging me would be the cooler, sorry, but it's an ugly looking thing. Extra £2, can get BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 2. Also added dedicated graphics card, cheap, silent & efficient.

You think the k2 is ugly? Each to there own I guess...

The dark rock doesn't compete which the top three.. D14, TC14PE and K2.. Id pick one of them...

don't need to include a gpu. Read above posts.

i care less about looks, and go more for better cooling, as it's inside and not seen in my case, then again don't like windows in cases, not needed and most of the time can't see in anyway so a waste, like glow tubes etc and fancy lights on ram etc, pointless

I see where your coming from zakk, at the end of the day performance is king, so swapping the k2 for the less effective dark rock is madness. :)... Also the k2 is beautiful.

I quite like the idea of windowed cases (though never having one myself). I like seeing things working. I do tend to leave my case open now and again, just for that purpose. :).

Lights and tacking cooling things aren't for me...

Windows are good as long as they don't have fan grilles on them! :p

Its why I love the Switch 810 and hoping for them to make a window for the Ghost.

remove most case side and leave it off and you alter the airflow and make stuff hotter, as case have been designed to be in a closed box, given a window still keeps the box and airflow good i see no reason for it, but as most are under desks and out of view for me i'd never have one.

a good cooler or the best one out there would have to work harder without the side case on in many if not most cases, unless it was designed to work that way, which i can't think of any i've ever seen or read have been tbh.

i can see the point of water / liquid cooling, but not for show, you put a fast engine in a car, but very few have clear bonnets so you can see it.

i look inside each month for dust build up and to clean the fan with air and check and clean the filters etc, but apart from that it closed and locked.

Ahhhhh your one of the few people Zak who like to look at their shiny equipment which they pade their yearly wages on ;)

Anyway back on topic anyone got any changes they would make to my spec? :)

True, true but those cards are expensive for what they are. If your not doing very heavy work a mid range gaming gpu works well...

I used my old gtx 460 for PhotoShop and CAD work whole at uni and it was great.
