Spec me: £50k 4x4

Cheapest one for sale currently, is still £10,000 over OP's budget... And new ones are £20,000+ over OP's budget... :p

50K would get you a Porsche Macan S Diesel.
190 kW (258 hp)
6.3 secs 0 - 100 km/h (0 - 62 mph)
Combined (44.8 - 46.3)

Quality wise, it makes the Discovery look like it's been built out of Lego.

Too small again really. This genuinely isn't going to be a car for occasional kerb bumping. It's going to spend a lot of its life at a horse livery yard with feed, bedding, tack, etc in it and work through a British Eventing season to boot. Ie, it's tyres will be General Grabbers. It needs to work (as well as look OK).

XC90 is also 2k over so only 8k over before haggling, a small price to pay for a V8 engine that will hit 60 in under 5 seconds yet tow 3.5 tons. Virtual cockpit/infotainment system is miles ahead of the JLR/Volvo offering.

I'm not a massive fan of Audis, however, I am practical and if the car fits the bill then it's OK. Interesting, a review from JC says the SQ7 doesn't really fit the bill of any of it's tasks.

It's rubbish off road (although that was down to tyres). The school run is too much power and a bit bumpy....hmmm

The XC90 is a really compelling package - it's well priced, very practical for family duties and it's a comfortable car to drive with a nice interior. If you can deal with the size (it sounds like you can) and the 4 cylinder engines then it's a really option.

If you don't need 7 seats, another option might be a VW Touareg.

In light of the other £50k recommendation thread - just up your budget to £200k and get the new Lambo Urus :p

Regarding the XC90, I'm not sure how you're going to find the engine coming from the Disco.

Although it not first hand experience, my dad originally favoured the XC90 so went to a dealer to try one. He found it to be quite noticeably 4 cyl and given that he'd just demo'd the Q7 with the V6 lump in it he was rather underwhelmed. He then tried the V90 with the same engine and it seemed to be a much better match (hence he's now in a V90 CC).

Are 7 seats a must?

My issue with the new Volvo's is the infotainment system and interface is rubbish !!
I guess if you're coming from a JLR car though it will seem awesome :p

It's funny you should say that...

My Dad came from a 2011 FFRR :D

I think the system is pretty good though, it does the tablet thing very well. Although it may not be as completely slick as the iDrive system is, the interiors imo are leagues above a bimmer as far as looks go.

I hired the new shape XC90 last year for a Scotland trip. Did about 1200 miles over a week in it.

They are a very good, efficient, well styled, well built and utterly dull car to drive. If you want to get from A - B with loads of space and comfort you can't fault them. Better value and (probably) more reliable than a JLR car but both the Range Rover FF and RRS are much better to drive and just make you feel better.

Best and worst thing about them is the big iPad screen. Looks cool, and integrates well with phones and spotify etc, but like all these systems they require a lot of staring at to use, meaning your eyes are off the road more than they should be to do the simplest of things. Lane guidance was a nuisance too on narrow roads, although I (eventually!) found where to turn that off! Steering is overly light and completely numb. The 4 cylinder was a bit thrashy but had just about enough power for day to day driving.

I'd hire one again in a shot, and maybe lease one, but I couldn't bring myself to spend my own money on one.

V90 Cross Country? Really nice car. Might not be 'hardcore 4x4' enough for your needs though?
