Spec me a bluetooth car speaker.

Ok so I've done a bit of digging on this one. What threw me off was the "Superbuddy" moniker, which lead me to this:

Not convinced that you're after one of these, I continued and found this:

I used to have this exact thing in a Corsa many years ago and it worked very well. As you say, they're £24 on Amazon so honestly, that's what I would do.

However, if your dad is tech literate then you could consider one of those Android Auto things, like this:

BUT!!!!! Whilst these Chinesium android units can be bought cheap, you need to be aware of a few things:

  • You MUST do your research, they are extremely hit and miss. Some are rather good and the rest are absolutely awful and will drive your dad nuts
  • They will very likely require adapters and extra bits to get them to work correctly
  • Even the good ones will hang and freeze from time to time so if your dad's not tolerant of less than perfect reliability tech, then I'd stick with the Supertooth.

Ultimately the Supertooth is familiar to your dad, it's reliable, it's proven. By replacing it with a potentially finnicky head unit, you're potentially introducing all manner of irritations and frustrations, not to mention an install that will test you.

If cash is a bit tight and you have some screwdrivers to hand, then a replacement battery is £10 and extremely easy to replace.

Good luck :)

Thanks for that, However dad is not tech savvy, when he gets stuck with tech he'll do three things. 1st = ask me. 2nd = when I'm not around (at work) he'll guess so he breaks it. 3 = no patience, so get's angry and frustrated so he'll break it.

No hope of him operating a android unit, no point in replacing battery in the old BT speaker, he'd rather buy a new one and recycle.

Well there's your answer I guess. Even the most basic replacement will likely have features that will confuse him. Just replace like-for-like then :)

I'm going to put an end to this thread. I've been putting off buying a BT speaker, as I've so busy lately. Dad asked me two days ago if I had ordered one, I said no as I was researching for a new one. He said 'buy the same one I had before if you can still get it' Well he's familiar with the old one as he had it for years, getting another one was a no brainer, dunno why I bothered to research a new one or start this thread. I've asked him to keep this one charged as that's how the old one packed up.

The moral to this story is, If you are buying replacement tech for elderly people, buy the same model or the nearest equivalent, that way you'll get some P&Q.
