Spec me a car for ~£5000

I drive a 1999 Focus 1.8 TDI and its fantastic. Handles well, and has more than enough power for day to day driving. Granted it wont blow your socks off, but you can pick one up for less than 3k now so well worth it imo.

Not too keen on a TDi, think it'd be best getting the TDCi, not sure on the differences really but I'm sure someone will say :p

The other question is it worth buying from a dealer such as Jennings Ford who offer a 2 year warranty and it'll cost slightly more or get it from another garage with maybe less of a premium. How about even an auction?

EDIT: I've got a friend at Patterson's Ford, anyone know if he could get any discount or anything? Maybe if you know someone at Ford already.

Anyone?

Was thinking about a Golf TDi aswell, how many miles and age would be decent for £5,000?

BeatMaster :D

Don't waste your time with the Golf, it doesnt handle as well as the Focus, it'll be older for the money, the non turbocharged petrol models are slow, the decent turbodiesels and turbopetrols cost an absolute fortune, they cost money to fix when they go wrong and unfortunately if everything in life WAS as reliable as a Volkswagen we'd all be stuffed.

Mind you, they've got damped grab handles, I guess.

(a) Spend around £2000-3000 and get something say W or X reg
(b) Spend a bit more say £5000 and get maybe a Ford Focus 1.6 on say a Y plate
(c) Spend a little bit more say £6000 and get maybe a Ford Focus on a 5x or 0x plate with a 1.6

IMO the Focus is the best car in its class, but I think you may have your valuations abit mixed up, I've been looking around a lot and its hard to get a good focus for £2000-3000 and but it certainly wont jump to £5000 for a Y reg, IMO. I've seen the face lift focus start from £3500 but you will still have to check it over properly. I dont think its worth looking at any other cars if you like the focus, I think its the best choice if you like it.

I dont think you're mate will be able to give you a discount, as employee discount is normally only for new cars and not on used, however he may be able to jiggle the price a tiny bit as he knows you (or take you to the cleaners).

Ooh damped grab handles, mmm! :p I see exactly what you mean though, it might be a nice car and reliable etc but when or if something goes wrong it'll be pricey to fix nevermind cost a fortune to buy in the first place even with loads of miles on the clock!

Well I do really like the Focus, seems the nicest choice with excellent reliability, handling and such. It's just a question of where to get one from, a main dealer such as Jennings, a normal dealer, car hypermarket, private or auction

Wonder when the best time would be to buy, got between now and September, might be worth waiting to see what offers become available perhaps? I know the guy at Jennings said that a couple of summers ago they did 0% finance which is quite handy.

aahh right, that will help me thinks. I'm a bit biased, i learnt in a mk1 focus and mk2 focus, and my dad has one himself. Plus what I hear in the press etc and everyone on here, it is most probably the best choice. Normally when some one says spec me a car between £4k to £8k i'd say focus.

Biased in 1 sense, clever in another. I mean you suggesting a focus based on them three is a good sign, as it shows that they musn't of had many problems otherwise you wouldn't recommend them :)

Decisions, decisions. There is also the question of going petrol or diesel, argh so many choices :o

The Focus is supposed to be one of the most reliable cars on the UK roads, in its class at least.

It's not cheap french plastic, it's not expensive VW badge. You get most electric kit as standard and the 1.6-2.0 are perfectly insurable, although bigger engine, lesser the fuel economy obviously.

The 1.6 would be the best bet, the 1.4 would be a wasted venture in my opinion. I learnt in a 1.6 focus too, it was very nice. My girlfriends dad has had a 1.8 petrol for 5 years or so from new (51 reg) and it's done a lot of daily miles and he's not had a single problem with it. I'd go as far to say he loves it.

I own a 2002 (51) 1.4 206 Quiksilver and it's not as well built as the Focus. Just better looking. I paid £5500 for it last march, so there must be a decent Focus out there for 5k, surely.

Looks like the Focus is the winner and will hopefully pick up either a 1.6 or TDCi over the next couple of months :)

Cheers guys for your input, much appreciated! :)

I've just bought a Mondeo TDCi 3 weeks ago from Jennings in middlesbrough, it's on a '03 plate and i love ikt, i paid £7k for it and was driving a Seat before. Tax is £135 / year, insurance is good and from inside it doesn't feel like a big car, it's great on the twisties and is quick enough to boot. Plus as has been mentioned already, you'';ll get a lot more mondy than focus for your money. You're even entering ghia territory there :)

7k is quite a bit more than 5k unfortauntely, and for 5k he'll most likely be limited to a TDDi engine or a petrol.

I still don't think a petrol engine would be that bad in terms of economy (compared to the initial increase in cost of buying the equivilent diesel etc) as long as he's not talking starship mileages, which he isn't.

Just spotted a 51' plate (5dr, Silver) Ford Focus TDCi LX with Climate Pack and 36,000miles for £6,295 at a local garage. Comes with a 6 months warranty too.

I've got a few months yet so might be worth hanging fire, I think :)

So many choices and decisions to make, I'm sure there could be some haggling to be done on the Foci, to say £5,500, maybe.

There was no climate pack for the LX.

I blame the dealer, think I'll give that a miss then. I think it's definately going to be between the 1.6 and TDCi, all depending on prices. The 1.6 might be the best option, as I think they'll do a similar amount of MPG in reality:o

Basically my journey will consist of a 8 miles or so journey of B roads then 27 miles of the A1 then the return journey. This will happen 4 times a week so will roughly be about 280miles per week for 24 weeks of university. Plus some more miles when at home but wouldn't say too many.

Any further thoughts?
