Spec me a CCTV System

@LFltecher

that seems like a LOT of cameras

Have you drawn out the positions, FOV and pixel density?

I'm guessing 4 cameras at the front of a house would also raise a lot of complaints. Unless it's a castle your protecting.

2 should be enough one on either side pointing across each other

I haven't done a diagram looking at the field of view yet. I'm still trying to get my head around all the various aspects which you need to take into account with the cameras.

Although there would be 4 forward facing cameras, the ones on either side of the house near the front (both are several meters from each corner) would be to cover the side entrance (on the left hand side) and the walkway by the side of the house (on the right hand side), so neither would cover much of the drive.
The one on the front (above the porch) would cover the drive and the one under the porch would cover the front door - that was the thinking anyway.

I have concerns that if anyone tried to break into the property it would be via access from the front. There is a trainline at the back of the property so access would be difficult.

Ive got 4 on the front of mine and 3 on the back. Ive got the Hikvision dome versions and they're quite discrete. I asked my neighbour if he was cool with them before installing which he was.

Don't forget IR illumination

and if some wants "in" these will be no(little) deterrent

trainline - perfect access

After an attempted break in the police said that the best position for a camera is right above the front door as usually a potential burglar would knock on the door first to make sure there is no one in. IF someone answers then they usually say they working in the area cleaning drive ways or something similar but as soon as they see that their face will have been fully captured they will leave the entire area. Obviously its not going to put all off of course.

I had a play with the top view based on the fov information on the Hikvision website;

What is the accepted method for IR illumination?
Is it something separate of can you get it built into a security light?

After some advice if someone is kindf enough.

I have four runs of two cat6 cables to cctv points. Previously they used adaptors and were part of an analogue 4 camera system. That system is now gone.

I still have the runs in place ready for a new system.

Do I get a dedicated DVR and four new cameras? All it would mean is crimping on ethernet jacks etc

Or do I install a switch connected to the rest of my wired network and get four cameras and use my qnap nas as a dvr?

Bit of back story, my house is fully wired with cat 6, multiple runs to each room connect via 30 ports worth of switches etc

What are peoples thoughts?

heads up for anyone using the hikvision ivms 4500 android app - dont update it the new one is shocking, images are small with no full screen option and playback is in ultra wide screen with no option to change it that i can see

Anyone? Leaning towards the QNAP solution. Anyone running surveillance station on their qnap?

CCTV cameras use a lot of bandwidth, they'll slow your network. Also on the assumption you've not got client isolation or VLANS anyone who comes in can see them. I dont like that from a security perspective. I'd go with NVR, it'll issue the cameras IP addresses on a separate subnet so.will essentially be its own LAN, much more secure.

e; You could also use your NAS as a secondary recording device for backups if you so wished :)

cheers guys/

@dmsims : the qnap (TS 453 mini) is already in situ. It would just be the costs of the cameras and an additional camera license.

Heading towards a DVR. I can sort the wiring myself.

However, any dvr really needs to be as plug and play as it comes. Any suggestions for one, plus 3 camera's. Budget around £600

I'll take a look later on tonight domestic pricing wise. What sort of storage would you want? I'd go for the Hikvision range, NVR provides the power to the camera etc, you plug them in and they work, then just assign your harddrives and set to record.

Hikvision I guess. Got a spare 2tb drive knocking around from an older qvis unit.

Really need something that is easy to configure and accessible from an app on my phone.

Slightly window shopping just now but does any other company offer the same ease that Swann seem to suggest? I like the QR code reader idea.
What do you guys use to attach the cable onto harling? As said like the idea of Swann but the bigger holes to fit the connectors also puts me off.

Great cheers dude.

Can I set the unit up headless?

Also, could you recommend a dvr capable of 4 poe cameras? And some domes?

Edit: heading towards this: Hikvision DS-7604NI-E1/4P

Nah sadly not, you need a monitor to go through the first bits. VGA and HDMI to the rear and USB for mouse :)

4 of these likely in 2.8mm configuration, demo image in trust in a second, just realised the picture I had on my desktop was for a different camera :)

Hey guys I took a punt on a cheap Chinese PoE IP cam off the forest and am really surprised by the results.

Wondering if anyone could spec me a decent PoE PTZ Onvif IP camera I'm looking at some imports at between the £100-£150 range but am not sure if I'll be lucky
