Something quite tall - not these low down types, must be solid oak - no MDF etc! And something that will last a lifetime, so quite good quality. Pref. somewhere in the Midlands so I can go and have a look, but would consider mail order.

Thanks

* Very chunky plain solid oak
* King size
* High - not a low type bed

I have looked but they all seem to be low, hence me asking here as I know a lot of you are down south where most stylish things seem to be bought from, and someone might know a decent place to get something like this from.

warren evans do high quality chunky furniture. they build to order so you can specify finish, really nicely made too. best bed i've had:)

If you intend spending a few quid just get one made, thats what we did, then you get what you want.

Yeah, I thought about that as well, and did have a look around my local area for a quality joiner - but turns out I don't live in the kind of area that has this kind of skill, shame really, as it's the best way to get what you want!

I've also considered - might be crazy - making my own out of new un-treated sleepers, is this a lot to take on? I'm no expert in the dove tail joints department!

Thanks for all your suggestions, think the best one that comes close to what I'm after is the place in Matlock :)

Find a joiner in a different area, ours come from a bloke in Devon, we gave him the measurements and told him what wood and that was it, 3 weeks and 1200 quid later it was here.

Railway sleepers are incredibly heavy especially in Oak, around 100kg so its no easy feat moving these things!

Best bet would be to do google some bespoke furniture makers within ~50miles and get some quotes, sure you might pay a little more + delivery but you'll get a quality specced product thats also gonna last years and years!

Get one made would be a little bit more expensive but last longer and look better.

Would take a good chippy about 6 hours to make up a solid oak bed if he has the plans to work off if he has to do them himself it will cost a hell of a lot more.

Does the bed need to be able to come apart for future transport because being a joiner i class solid oak bed as being oak dowelled as well. Nothing hurts more than seeing a oak bed ruined with bolts and screws everywhere holding it together.

Ring some furniture makers or joiners local to you and get some quotes.

i just bought a new bed and mattress from monster beds, theyre rubbish, weak and thin `sprung` slats that dont last long (they straighten rather than being bowed then they split then they snap) beds really basic and cheaply made, headboard is apart of the bed, its the rear feet yet the amount it moves back and forth at the top is unreal, we chose a foam mattress rather than a conventional one and its equally as pap, so thin we can feel the two bars under it.

this was in a `sale` marked down from £600 so thought it was a decent bed. wrong.

definitely spend £600/£700 plus and avoid sprung slats like the plague. sounds like you know what you want though so wont end up dissapointed like me.
