spec me a console :)

Extra/ongoing expense for Xbox 360 would be:
  • Xbox Live subscription ~£35/year - £25 if you shop around.
  • Play and Charge kit for wireless pad (you can just use the included USB cable for the PS3 pads)
  • HD-DVD drive or standalone Blu-ray player if you wanna go HD in the future - HD-DVD is no longer a common format, it is not used any more.
  • Proprietary hard drive if you want to upgrade, which are horribly overpriced (any 2.5" HDD will do for PS3) - I think about £60 for 120GB (not great I know)
  • Wireless headset (there is an official PS3 one, but most generic bluetooth ones will work fine)
  • TOSLINK adapter if you want to use optical out (PS3 has a native output)
  • Memory cards (you can use any generic USB drive on PS3)
  • Wireless adapter - but you've already ruled this out.
I'm sure some of those may be wrong, so Xbots please correct me :p

Xbox Live subscription ~£35/year

I just don't understand this - being a PC gamer, I expect free, well implemented online access as standard (apart from Activision/EA games ;)). Is there much more to the 360 online experience that makes it worth the premium over a PS3?

The 360 is certainly better online. More people playing - PSN can feel a little barren - and more people on comms (good and bad depending on who you end up playing with!). Overall it's just a more sociable and game filled experience.

You can join groups of up to 4 (iirc) friends and have a private voice chat session while you play a game. You can also use voice chat with those 3 other people even if you're not playing the same game.

That's the only notable advantage in my eyes.

Oh and, Sony offer dedicated servers for the majority of their first party games, Microsoft rely mostly on peer 2 peer.

PSN can feel a little barren

That used to be the case a year or two ago, now i'd say it's populated enough to not have a noticeable difference between xbox live.

I own both and I definitely prefer the 360 online. But the PS3 has the advantage of being free which is definitely a big plus. A bit of a negative with PSN is every online game I seem to go into no one seems to have or use a headset. On Xbox Live the vast majority of online games I have played people seem to have headsets on and be chatting away. Both consoles are great so whichever way you go you cant go wrong. I've only just picked up a PS3 a couple of months ago after owning an Xbox since launch but I'm not disappointed now I have both. They're both great consoles. If I had to pick one for online multiplayer I would definitely go with the 360 personally. If it was for single player games it would definitely be the PS3.

If you have a gaming PC like myself then PS3 is the best console to get. Look what 'big' games the Xbox360 will bring you over the PC. Alan Wake (great game, I admit) and Forza 3. Make up a list of other games you would buy that you can't already play. Xbox's big 'exclusives' are things like Left4dead, Mass effect etc. All of which are available on the PC. The PS3 on the otherhand has armfulls of exclusive games. Uncharted 1+2, Heavy Rain, Everybody's golf, God of war 3, Killzone 2, Resistance 1 + 2, Little Big Planet, Infamous, GT5:p, MGS4, Yakuza 3 ETC.

The Xbox 360 is a great console but to someone who owns a gaming PC like me and you, the PS3 is the one to have.

If it's your lounge, then PS3 for the Blu-Ray. They're equally matched gaming platforms. One is better in some areas, the other in the other etc.

But only the PS3 has you covered for HD movies - and will do for the next 5 years.

What happens if he wants to play Mass Effect in his lounge. :p

Just kidding, I agree with what you say in your post, best thing to do is to look at the games catalogues and see what friends are playing and on what console. I ended up with both out of greed/not wanting to miss out on anything and they both do get a fair bit of usage, albiet more online with the 360 due to friends and pad preference.

I own a 360 elite but if I was buying now I would probably opt for a ps3 just for the added bluray, free psn and built in wireless, thats why I bought my son one for chrimbo as it was actually a cheaper option in the long run (extra £26 for live, £40-50 for wireless adapter)

also ps3 works with a g25 wheel and other pc peripherals, standard bluetooth headsets etc so more compatiility compared to 360.

I agree with the above, most of my friends own a 360 (blokes in our 30's lol) and the pads are much better to use imho

That's true. It's annoying when people say that the xbox is cheaper or that the PS3 is overpriced. They are about the same price and any slight difference isn't worth being the deciding factor.

360 owner here, but i'd say the PS3 sounds like a better choice for your needs unless budget is really going to play a bigger part in the decision.

Also, if you can, wait 2-3 weeks and go for one of the newer revision slims.

Another PC gamer convert here...

I bought a PS3 a couple of weeks ago after weighing up the two options. Went with PS3 for the media centre options, BluRay, free online play, no RROD and the fact that most Xbox exclusives that I'm interested in ended up on the PC anyway.

No regrets either. Just coming to the end of Uncharted 2 and really enjoying it (although the game is really, really easy). MGS4 and LBP are waiting in the wings and I think my better half has got me Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 for my birthday next week :D

I much prefer my Xbox to my PS3. Mostly due to online functions, xbox live is a really well put together system. If you want to play games online then id deffo go xbox.

On the media side of things the ps3 does offer slightly more BR and better HD streaming/HD/codec support but if you have a windows7 PC as your server then yo can stream with mpedia center fine to the xbox.

The fact is if you the party/game join systems on xbox have allowed me to play with my mates without having to resort to calling them on the phone to get into the same game. PS3 just cant always do that.

On the side note, you can use USB drives on Xbox now (after formating them), Play and charge is not needed if you have normal batterys(disposable or rechargable) and the hidiously over priced wireless adapter is not an issue to you.
And the TOS linkadapter thing only matters if your connecting with HDMI, and even so you can cut down the normal cable that you not using if you want to do that(SD/HD cable that comes with the system).

I look at it this way.

If Sony told me that for £40 a year, I could use the 360 pad on their console, I would snap their hand off.

Rofl :D I tried plugging in my wired 360 pad to my PS3 the other day, and it said "unrecognised USB device detected" or something - lies!! :(

Heavy Rain
Nvidia seems to think that Quantic Dream's latest interactive storytelling adventure isn't a PS3 exclusive. They have the title listed as one of the games "current and upcoming" which can take advantage of their video cards' PhysX GPU-acceleration features.

Or maybe this and they got the platform wrong?

The majority of the titles employing PhysX have been PC games, but an upcoming title for PlayStation 3 called Heavy Rain will exploit PhysX.

Slightly off topic though isn't it :p;)
