What are you going to be serving? How many people will need to connect to the machine? How much would you like to spend? How much disk space do you need?

the server is for upto 300 gamers connected playing games such as css, battlefield and wow.

i'm not sure how much disk space ill need as im just learning at the moment.

price is not a problem.

so it'll be handling multiple games at once? I don't know a whole lot about game servers but it seems like you're going to need some hefty hardware.

EDIT: Also, I didn't think that you could have DIY servers in WoW. I thought that you had to connect to the official servers.

Well before you responded I started to spec this:

I think that with as many users as you say you'll have you'll want a proc with more operations per second. You might even want to look at multi-socket multi-core machines. OcUK does not stock any of those high-end server motherboards.

A Mac Pro with dual quads and the cheapest everything else would be a good start. After that you could add more nodes if it proved insufficient.

Open the box, plug it in, whack Debian onto it, install your game servers, and go. I bet you could have it up and running in under an hour.

EDIT: If money's no object, you can't go wrong with this: :p

4-disk RAID 0 over 15k RPM SAS would be rather quick, as would 8 Opteron cores at 2.8 Ghz.

would this be ok as i work for a computer shop so could get the parts for cost

Gigabyte GA G33M-S2 Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Antec NSK6500 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W PSU

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

or would i need higher

one for each game

20-40 players

For 300 people you are going to need a large server, lots of memory and lots of CPU cores.

If you have 20 people per game thats 15 consective games/servers running at one time possibly.

There is no way your are going to run all of that on 2Gb RAM and a single dual core CPU.

one server per 20-40 players (not all 300 playing each other)

im not sure yet, what would you suggest for a os
