Spec me a dog?

Alsations are great dogs, but maybe a bit big/strong with a small child around the house though, also they can be a bit dominat around other dogs.

Staffy's however are considered one of the more reliable breeds around children.

Nowhere near as ugly either :D

However, I still wouldn't risk it around babies. They're too powerful. They could be the most loyal and protective breed ever, but with the amount of power they have in their jaws and shoulders I wouldn't have my baby around one.

Plus if he's anything like me he wouldn't want an ugly monstrosity like that in his house.

I beg to differ ;)

Where a good Staffy spends most of his time, Asleep at his owners feet.

Having said All that though & having a Staffy grow up & live his Whole life with my daughter I personally would recommend a 6 month to a year old Mongrel from your local rescue place.

Bull terrier
When I was a young lad, our Bull Terrier went mad after four years of total domestic bliss, bit my brother and went on a wild rampage around the neighbourhood killing three of my neighbour's dogs before my father shot him. It was many years later before I got the full story (I was too young to hear about the rampage!).

Anyway, not wanting to put the OP off dogs altogether, we also had a labrador that was the most cuddliest, lovable, charming, friendly dog I've ever known (and my family has had it's fair share - from mongrels, to BTs, pomeranians :D, poodles, retrievers, setters, spaniels and yorkies). I'd go lab if I was in your position. Mind you, all the other dogs we had were fab too :D

I guess it's down to the personality of the dog, my parents have a white one and it's so gentle with everyone especially our cats, or the kitten they just rescued. They go sleep in the same bed as the dog!!

But I do agree to some extent, they're powerful dogs. Need training well.

Parents have a Doberman too and that thing ran into me once and seriously nearly broke my leg, the power in them dogs is incredible

Bull Terrier + child in the house = more likely disaster.

He doesn't want a fighting breed.

Ugly is your personal opinion. I'll give you that.

Fighting breed. Again, total lack of knowledge from someone who hasn't done their research (although, granted, you're not the only one). They are NOT a fighting breed. They can fight, they can handle that well, but they are NOT bred to fight. The dog you are referring to is actually a "Bull AND Terrier" of which a "Bull Terrier" is not one.

Bull Terrier + child in house = a dog that will play with the child.

In fact, let's get this age old myth settled once and for all:

Bull Terrier : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Terrier

Bull AND Terrier (totally different dog) : http://www.bulldoginformation.com/bull-terrier.html

Someone suggested a Jack Russell. Bad idea.

Ye my thoughts exactly, they're hunting dogs and take allot of discipline to get out of the habit of chasing small animals, so having one around a baby isnt a good idea.

My mam has 2 and they need allot of walking, and they chase small animals anywhere, they can even climb trees.

He said Bull Terrier. I was talking about those evil-looking triangular-headed things. I already said above that Staffies look loads better.

I know but i was head down posting whilst you was :D
I love my Frank staffy dog but He Bites :( Wasn't his fault but the facts are he bit someone, not nasty teethy just a snap. I take Absolutely No chances with him & would never have him alone around Anyone that didn't know him.
My old Staff lived his whole life growing up around kids & never once got nasty.
Staffs are great with people but if they bite then you are mincemeat. I'd Never recommend such a powerful dog around young kids. Whoever said Collie or Jack Russell is Mental as well. Collies are about the worst dog out there for snapping & Jack Russell's are guaranteed to bite :p

What about a Schnauzer, they dont shed coat wise which is great.

This is ZaZa, our minature Schnauzer pup.
We had a Standard Schnauzer but they are sooooo different to the Minis and giants.

You are in luck

Crufts is next week, a well as being a poncey dog show it also has a massive section called 'Discover Dogs' in which pretty much every breed has a stand manned/ dogged by owners and their pets. You can discuss all the aspets of ownership with real owners, see their dogs in the flesh and discuss issues such as children and potential breed issues.

I went with my parents before they chose thier dogs and as well as being very informative it was a great day out

They're utility dogs and used to be ratters. Not sure how they'd be with a baby.

Your parent's dogs are awesome. Are they larger than the norm? I think I've only really known miniatures and never seen them as large as those two.

I personally like the Giant Schnauzer an unusual and majestic dog
