Spec me a drink!

So you don't like alchohol? Don't drink it then. I don't understand people that are of the mentality 'I must get wasted to have a good time' I drink because I genuinely like the taste of whatever it is I drink. Have a coke if you don't like alchohol!

No, he wants the fun effects of alcohol, but doesn't like the taste. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. And there's plenty of ways to hide the taste...

...it just tastes wrong!

Lager or Cider I can usually manage a pint at a struggle but its just too gassy and after half usually starts to taste yuk.

Can anyone recommend an alcoholic drink thats easy to drink and tastes nice, only reason being its a mates 30th tomorrow and we all plan to have a good night drinking, which wont be good if I can only manage 1 pint!

Main thing if its tastes like alcohol, I probably wont like it.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I still think beer and lager taste terrible and I've managed to become quite a big drinker. It's nothing to do with not "being a man" either... I even tried drinking a beer after I'd already had plenty of my favourite whiskey, since I know that by then my tastebuds are anaesthetised LOL. I can eat raw chilli's after a good few whiskeys but one sip of beer and I still want to hurl - looks like someone took a leak in a glass and to me doesn't taste much better either.

So, due to this dislike of the taste of the common "mens" alcoholic drinks, I experimented a lot with all different kinds of mixers, and the best drink I've found to hide the taste of the alcohol is probably chilled vodka in chilled applejuice... the alcohol "taste" is carried largely by evaporation so the cooler it is, the less you should taste it (believe it or not the nose plays a bigger part in taste than the tongue in many cases - it's more sensitive).

Since you're not a big drinker I recomment 1.5 to 2 shots (about 38-50ml) of standard (40% ABV) vodka in a typical half-pint glass, filled to the top with tasty fruitjuice. If you're not a fan of applejuice but don't mine pure orange... something like Southern Comfort usually goes quite well with the orange since it's already got an orangey thing going on. :D

Other "long drinks" that are very refreshing are stuff like mojito's (can buy a good £14 bottle of bacardi mojito from tesco) water'd down slightly with good lemonade or sprite if you like it. Again, if you aim to get 2 UK units of alcohol in each half pint (or 4 in a pint if you like to drink en-masse as I do) then the taste shouln't be too strong. I started with 4 UK units (100ml of 40% ABV spirits) in my pint mixers... and now I'm up to 6... so if you want to be able to keep up with people drinking typical beers (2-4 UK units per pint) then this should be perfect, and tasty to boot.

Vodka in diet coke I personally find SLIGHTLY bitter... so I either go for full fat supersugary coke or captain morgan's dark rum instead (since it's quite sweet).

Also be aware that after a fair few dark drinks (whiskeys, rums etc) the "tanins" in the alcohol will add up and can soon make you really sleepy... in that case mix it with some high caffeine energy drink if you like those - or drink the energy drink separately if it ruins the taste).

A good mixed drink is an underappreciated art form. :)

Thanks for the info, its the same as i feel with lager and cider really, can stomach half a pint, maybe a pint but it just tastes wrong, no matter how much I try mask it.

Many alcoholic drinks are an acquired taste. The first few tries will be horrible, but what awaits is a fantastic experience. A bit like anal sex, really, and I'd recommend that to everyone.

Remind me not to have a drink with you. ;)

I'm in the same boat, i can only stomach like 2 pints max of beer/cider on the go, and thats only like bud, and only bulmers or something...

Try ammaretto and coke- or JD and coke, personally i prefer ammaretto....

don't see a point in vodka and coke, its just alcohol for the sake of alcohol in my opinion...

alternatively if you're secure with yourself, and going to a decent place get a nice cocktail like a mojito

Not very blokey drink but pimms apparently is nice..... wouldn't know myself.

Guinness? With blackcurrent too?

Also lager top (1/8 lemonade) - takes the alcohol twang away.... mostly

Oh, one more thing: drinking shots in juice is fine at home with supermarket spirits, but out at the clubs/pubs it can be a real ripoff... best to sneak a hip-flask of the spirit in and add a bit to their juice/coke if the party isn't at someone's house. :D Just don't get caught and kicked out LOL. :D

I bet 100% you'd like Jaques Fruit Cider, its good stuff and most places sell it and it normally comes served in a special glass which you can take home.
