Spec me a ......... hoover

Open my eyes = look

How does that tell you how they perform given you can't try them out in shops?

Considering the type of product it is, and depending on the state of your house it is not the most used item. (I hoover twice a week at best, have a pretty dust / dirt free house).

For what it is, imo such deliberation seems totally unnecessary to me.

'Such deliberation'? He posted a thread on a general discussion forum. The only deliberation in this thread really is the pointless arguing from yourself.

You fail at the internet.

I have a Dirt Devils DD9101 (upright bagless) that I was given by a friend who was upgrading and the biggest problem I had with it was that it was practically unusable on rugs - the suction was so strong that it would lift a 6'x4' rug like paper. However, it's now half-broken in some way and the suction is minimal. I think it might be due to me washing the filter stage that appears to be made of cardboard and using it the next day - cue burning smell from the motor. Oops! Very good if you don't break it, though.

I want a bagless vacuum cleaner with a washable filter. I nearly bought a Morphy Ricgards Orb that was on sale for £35, but checked and found that every one of the 20-odd reviews I looked at slated it.

So I'm with the OP - spec me a vacuum cleaner.

The ***** way but seriously, who wants to spend money on a bloody hoover...I bought a £17 value hoover when i moved out from home from Tesco 3 years ago. It comes with a 12 month guarantee and although its made of cheese, its actually a very strong performer, as strong as any dyson or other brand.

It wont last 12 months as its made of cheese (as previously mentioned), at this point take it back and swap it for another one complete with a brand new guarantee next time you do your shopping. Ive had 3 now.

Job done? No more hoover worries, always under warranty.

I was going to say Henry, but after reading Jezs' post, I think he's onto something.

***** ghetto throw-away vacuum cleaners for the proverbial!

But seriously, Henry is where it's at if you want something that'll last and do a good job.

Except for the fact that you dont get another 12 months of warranty - legally the warranty is from the original date of purchase.

FFS you want a vacuum cleaner not a Hoover, it's like calling a car a Ford.

Anyways, in my first flat here and i buy £25 bagless Asda things, they last about 6 - 9 months then i buy another it is great economics vs a Henry etc. OR get laminate flooring plus a £5 rush works out cheaper i the long run

You get a brand new receipt as if you have bought it that day :)

i've had two dyson DC05 break within the last two years, the second one really started to lose it "sucking power" even with new filters.

Last weekend i bought a henry, the difference is amazing. It sucks so much you get a mini workout just pushing the nozzle around the carpet!

How are dirt cheap vacuum cleaners good economics? If you need to buy one every few months or even every year it isn't cheaper. My last Hoover (Hoover Alpine) was at least 15 years old and I only just had to replace it at Christmas.

I've had various Hoovers, Dysons and whatnot, and for performance and reliability none come close to a Henry.

Most people dont find that a vacuum lasts that long. I remember as a child my parents were always buying vacuums.

My way is the cheapest, if slightly morally incorrect. But it is only tesco so meh i dont have a problem doing it.

oh come on man, if u cant buy you're own hoover there is no hope

no hope for what? im being efficient in not wasting my money on something that'll only last 6months, please get out of the thread if you dont like it

yes we've established that

sorry but the silly comments are getting a bit annoying, its general discussion, not "abuse the person who asks the (in your view) silliest question" and its a perfectly valid question, i need a vacuum, i dont want to waste my money, is that so much to ask?

i think i might end up going for a henry considering how long they last, just hope there not as bad sucktion wise as the ones at work, though they are very old ones at work

I'm amazed that there is a 2 page thread about vacum cleaners, especially with people posting at gone 3am, oh wait im one of them lol

I need a new hoover, have no idea what im looking for really, when i think of hoovers i think of dyson and there really expensive

Whats a good one for under £75? the missus keeps looking at the cheapest possible ones shes can find but i cant help but think it'd be a waste of money when we could just get something with more ooomph and reliability, hence i need the life experiance of ocuk

Cheers :)

don't get the bagless ones they are a pile of junk. I bought an AEG 2300W bagless for 80 quid 2 weeks ago my gran can suck harder than it and it's really messy to empty.

I miss my philips mobilo 1800W best vacuum cleaner that I ever had. Actually we are probably taking the AEG back and asking for a refund under the trade descriptions act ie a vacuum cleaner that doesn't clean.

Just becasue your work has some battered old ones dosen't really count on it's sucking ability, but why do so many cleaning firms buy Henry's but not Dyson's? ;)

Don't know never heard of Henry's at all. Can't even find a site selling them

just googled them ahah the office cleaners in our place use em.

Never seen them in the local stores though guess they are mail order only.

Not all of the bagless ones are junk. The Dirt Devil I have was brilliant until I broke it. I had a £20 Goblin before. I used that on one carpet, then did a strip with the Dirt Devil as a test. The strip was visibly different. The Dirt Devil could pick up a 6x4 rug. It is extremely noisy, though, and the emptying was crap.

I think it's just harder to make an effective bagless cleaner than it is to make an effective bagged cleaner, and some companies fail at it.

Henry's, there bomb proof, we've used one for years without a bag and it's still going strong, in fact it wasn't until I asked on here I found out that they actually used a dust bag, I know loads of people that use them without one, thats how good these things are.

edit -

Actually, don't laugh but the other day I took the henry out side to empty the dust/dirt out into the bin, I put the motor back on went back in and vacuumed my whole place out, I noticed a mild odd smell during my vacuum cleaning but I just I passed it off as being nothing serious, anyway after I finished I packed the henry away and popped outside only to find the filter on the floor lol, I forgot to put it back in the henry after I emptied it, so I vacuumed my whole place out with no bag and no filter, anyway I've used it since with the filter back in and it seems fine, I tell these things are indestructible :D.
